Soldiers Help Out

Thai soldiers help residents cross a powerful stream in Pathum Thani, north of Bangkok, in mid-October. The area borders part of Bangkok that is protected from the flooding -- a source of growing resentment in Pathum Thani as weeks went by.

Soldiers and volunteers helped residents evacuate flooded areas to the north of the city. The military has received greater public approval in handling the floods than the government, according to a poll conducted in early November by Assumption University in Bangkok. Three-quarters of respondents in a separate poll of Bangkok residents said government relief efforts were inadequate.
