Oh Won't You Be ... My Neighbor

Sarah Palin's interview with CBS news anchor Katie Couric in September 2008 was considered a defining moment -- and a disaster -- for Palin's image and John McCain's presidential campaign. The most cringe-inducing moments: Palin's failure to name a single newspaper or magazine that she read, her inability to identify a Supreme Court decision with which she disagreed, and her deer-in-headlights answers to questions about McCain's economic policy. In response to a question about her foreign policy experience as governor of Alaska, she said, "Our next-door neighbors are foreign countries," inspiring Tina Fey's "I can see Russia from my house" joke on "Saturday Night Live." With life imitating art, that one went on to become, in the minds of many, what Palin herself had said.
