Tenkara Fly Rod

Favorited by Peter Buchanan-Smith
Founder & CEO, Best Made Company

Peter Buchanan-Smith built his Best Made Company around an unlikely object of desire: an axe. Buchanan-Smith’s favorite things share the qualities of the Best Made catalogue: functional, durable -- cool enough for hipster bling but unassuming for the modest woodsman.

The Tenkara Japanese fly rod is significantly longer (up to 14.5 feet) than a classic Western rod and takes a quicker, easier-to-learn cast for stream fishing. The telescoping rods, which cost between $140 and $215, don’t use reels.

“As we spend more time in front of screens, we’ll only be looking for more excuses to get outside,” Buchanan-Smith says. “A Tenkara fishing rod, in all its simple glory, will first and foremost be a call back to the wild.”
