Game critics have argued that "Grand Theft Auto" carried the industry forward with its use of adult story lines and open-world environments in which the player could freely explore a city. But Bushnell said the game, with its violence and sexual themes, has only held the game industry back.

"'Grand Theft Auto' is to games what pornography is to movies," he said. "You can always make money by racing along the bottom."
