Yanukovych Is Ousted

Feb. 21, 2014

Lawmakers welcome an unexpected vote for a law that paves the way for the quick release of jailed opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko in Kiev. Parliament votes to return the former Soviet state to its 2004 constitution, which limits the president's powers and gives lawmakers the right to appoint key ministers. The next day, it votes to remove Yanukovych and hold new elections. Ukraine will now have to replace the $15 billion bailout and natural gas discount Yanukovych had struck with Russia.
