A young man stares at the Chao Phraya River as its high tide pushes water into Bangkok residential neighborhoods.

Urbanization is increasing the city's vulnerability to floods. Groundwater pumping and construction on the soft earth of Bangkok diminish the land's ability to drain and causes the city to shift and settle. Climbing global temperatures and rising sea levels are also predicted to increase flood risk.
