1. Juniper Networks

Juniper Networks ranked at the top of the list with an average base pay of $159,990 for its software engineers. The Sunnyvale, California, company recently said it was cutting 280 jobs, or about 3 percent of its workforce. The move signaled that demand remains inconsistent for telecommunications equipment. Prior to that announcement, Juniper had increased its workforce by 1.2 percent from a year ago.

Methodology: Bloomberg ranked companies based on the average base salary for software engineers reported by employees to Glassdoor, a California-based jobs and career website, between October 1, 2012 and September 30, 2013. Salaries for each company were based on at least 50 reports by engineers. One-year employee growth was based on latest data available. Annual employee growth was unavailable for Twitter and Integral Development, which are private companies.
