The Cost of Safety in Bangladesh

After more than 1,100 Bangladeshi workers were killed in a garment factory collapse at Rana Plaza, London-based Mehul Srivastava and Sarah Shannon and set out to understand what it would cost to avoid other tragedies like it. Srivastava went to Bangladesh, coaxing a visa out a government reluctant to let in foreign journalists and accompanying inspectors to get into factories off limits to foreign journalists. The result was an in-depth look at how factory owners, pushed by international buyers to make a pair of jeans for less than 90 cents a pair, skimp on life-saving safety measures that would add just pennies to a $22 pair of jeans on Western racks.
