10. Illinois

Illinois breaks into the top 10 for the first time in the seven years ACEEE has ranked states.

Buildings consume more than 40 percent of total energy in the U.S., and mandatory energy codes in the Land of Lincoln now ensure a minimum level of efficiency for new residential and commercial buildings.

For the first time, a U.S. Department of Energy secretary participated in the release of the ACEEE scorecard. Secretary Ernest Moniz, in a prepared statement, applauded the states’ efforts and pledged further help as they strengthen their policies.
