15. Rex Tillerson, Exxon Mobil

Total compensation: $40.3 million

Exxon Mobil raised Chairman and CEO Rex Tillerson's pay by 15 percent last year. His compensation included a salary of $2.57 million, a $4.59 million bonus and stock awards valued at $19.63 million, according to a public filing.

Shares of the Irving, Texas-based company have risen 8 percent this year, giving the oil and gas giant a market value of $414.7 billion. Exxon is one of the biggest companies in the world measured by market value, and often competes for the top spot with Apple.
