Retrofitting a plane involves "stripping everything from nose to tail—seats, dividers, side walls, floor panels, everything," says Mark Cuellar, a project manager who has been with United for a quarter of a century.

The goals: Changing economy class from a 2-5-2 to 3-3-3 seat arrangement and installing the International Premium Travel Experience flat bed seats in premium classes, while updating inflight entertainment across the board.
