Tiffany Clock

Grand Central, with its soaring ceilings and Beaux-Arts facade, came close to confronting the same fate as the much maligned Penn Station, when in the late 1960s real estate developers sought to tear it down and build an office tower. City officials and the city's newly formed Landmarks Preservation Commission sprung into action, enlisting the help of former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and worked for over a decade to save the historic structure with a successful legal appeal that went all the way up to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1978.

Left, the antique Tiffany clock still ticks at Grand Central Terminal.
