Wabash National Corporation engages in designing, manufacturing and marketing standard and customized truck and tank trailers and related transportation equipment. Segments The company manages its business in three segments: Commercial Trailer Products, Diversified Products and Retail. Commercial Trailer Products segment The Commercial Trailer Products segment manufactures standard and customized truck trailers. Its principal product includes DuraPlate trailers. The company is also a producer of standardized sheet and post and refrigerated trailer products, as well as other specialty products, including converter dollies. Through its Transcraft subsidiary, the company also manufactures steel and aluminum flatbed and dropdeck trailers. Through its Commercial Trailer Products segment, the company also operates a wood flooring production facility that manufactures laminated hard wood oak products for its van trailer products. Diversified Products segment The Diversified Products segment includes an array of products and customer-specific solutions. The company’s DuraPlate composite panel technology contains unique properties of strength and durability that could be utilized in various applications in addition to truck trailers. The Diversified Products segment has leveraged its DuraPlate panel technology to develop various proprietary products, including a foldable portable storage container, the AeroSkirt and AeroSkirt CX, aerodynamic solutions for over-the-road trailers, as well as other solutions designed to improve overall trailer aerodynamics and fuel economy, most notably the Ventix DRS and AeroFin. In addition, the company utilizes its DuraPlate technology in the production of truck bodies, overhead doors and other industrial applications. These DuraPlate composite products are sold to original equipment manufacturers and aftermarket customers. The company’s subsidiary, Walker Group Holdings (Walker), is a manufacturer of liquid-transportation systems and engineered products based in New Lisbon, Wisconsin. Retail segment The Retail segment includes 15 company-owned retail branch locations, which are strategically located near large metropolitan areas to provide additional opportunities to distribute its products, diversify its factory direct sales, and also offer nationwide services and support capabilities for its customers. In 2014, the company entered into a definitive agreement with TEC Equipment, Inc. to transition three of its retail locations in California and Oregon to independent dealer facilities. Additionally, this segment includes nine on-site service locations, whereby the company provides dedicated service on a customer’s site in conjunction with long-term service and maintenance contracts. Products Commercial Trailer Products Dry Vans: The company’s product line includes trailers sold under DuraPlate, DuraPlateHD, DuraPlate XD-35 and FreightPro trademarks. Platform trailers consist of a trailer chassis with a flat or ‘drop’ loading deck without permanent sides or a roof. These trailers are primarily utilized to haul steel coils, construction materials and large equipment. In addition to its all steel and combination steel and aluminum platform trailers, the company also offers a premium all-aluminum platform trailer. Refrigerated Trailers: Refrigerated trailers have insulating foam in the walls, roof and floor, which improves both the insulation capabilities and durability of the trailers. The company’s refrigerated trailers are sold under the ArcticLite trademark and use its proprietary SolarGuard technology, coupled with its novel foaming process. Specialty Trailers, Parts and Other: This includes an array of specialty equipment and services focused on products that require a degree of customer specifications and requirements.
