Waste Management, Inc., through its subsidiaries, provides waste management environmental services in North America. The company partners with its residential, commercial, industrial, and municipal customers; and the communities that the company serves to manage and reduce waste at each stage from collection to disposal, while recovering resources and creating clean, renewable energy. The company’s ‘Solid Waste’ business is operated and managed locally by its subsidiaries that focus on geographic areas and provides collection, transfer, recycling and resource recovery, and disposal services. Through its subsidiaries, the company is also a developer, operator, and owner of landfill gas-to-energy facilities in the United States. The company owns or operates 252 landfill sites. It also uses waste to create energy, recovering the gas produced naturally as waste decomposes in landfills and using the gas in generators to make electricity. The company is a major recycler in North America, handling materials that include paper, cardboard, glass, plastic, metal, and electronics. The company provides sound recycling programs for municipalities, businesses, and households across the U.S. and Canada, as well as other services that supplement its traditional Solid Waste business. Operations The company evaluates, oversees, and manages the financial performance of its local Solid Waste business subsidiaries through its 17 areas. It also provides additional services that are not managed through its Solid Waste business. The services that the company provides include collection, landfill (solid and hazardous waste landfills), transfer, recycling and resource recovery, and other services. Collection Collection includes picking up and transporting waste and recyclable materials from where it was generated to a transfer station, material recovery facility (MRF) or disposal site. The company provides collection services under one of two types of arrangements: For commercial and industrial collection services, the company has a three-year service agreement. As part of the service, the company provides steel containers to various customers to store their solid waste between pick-up dates. For various residential collection services, the company has a contract with, or a franchise granted by, a municipality, homeowners’ association, or some other regional authority that gives the company the right to service all or a portion of the homes in an area. These contracts or franchises are for periods of three to six years. The company also provides services under individual monthly subscriptions directly to households. Landfill Landfills are the main depositories for solid waste in North America. As of December 31, 2014, the company owned or operated 247 solid waste landfills and 5 secure hazardous waste landfills, which represented the primary network of landfills in North America. The operation and closure activities of a solid waste landfill include excavation, construction of liners, continuous spreading and compacting of waste, covering of waste with earth or other acceptable material and constructing final capping of the landfill. The company’s hazardous waste landfills are sited, constructed, and operated in a manner designed to provide long-term containment of waste. It also operates a hazardous waste facility at which the company isolates treated hazardous waste in liquid form by injection into deep wells that have been drilled in certain acceptable geologic formations far below the base of fresh water to a point that is separated by other geological confining layers. Transfer As of December 31, 2014, the company owned or operated 298 transfer stations in North America. It deposits waste at these stations, as do other waste haulers. Recycling The company’s recycling operations provide communities and businesses with an alternative to traditional landfill disposal and support its strategic goals to extract value from the materials that the company manages. The company has also been advancing the single-stream recycling programs for commercial applications. Recycling involves the separation of re
