Boingo Wireless, Inc. provides mobile Internet solutions for smartphones, tablet computers, laptops, and other wireless-enabled consumer devices. Strategy The key elements of the company’s strategy include expanding its footprint of managed and operated and aggregated networks; leveraging its neutral-host business model to accelerate wholesale roaming and carrier offload partnerships; maximizing advertising and sponsorship sell-through for its inventory of advertising-enabled networks; and continuing to seek new ways to promote its brand through its managed and operated hotspots. Services Retail: The company enables individuals to purchase Internet access at its managed and operated hotspots and select partner locations around the world. The company offers a selection of month-to-month subscription and single-use access plans. Its single-use access plans provide access on a single device at a specific hotspot for a defined period of time, tolled from the time the user first logs on to the network. Military: The company also provides broadband and IPTV services for troops stationed on U.S. military bases. The company provides support services to its retail and military. Distributed Antenna System (DAS): The company offers its telecom operator partners access to its DAS infrastructure at certain of its managed and operated hotspot locations. The company deploys its DAS infrastructure within airports and other locations. Wholesale—Wi-Fi: The company’s integrated hardware and software platform allows it to provide a range of value-added services to network operators, device manufacturers, technology companies, enterprise software and services companies, and venue operators. Roaming Services: The company offers roaming services across its entire network of approximately 1 million hotspot locations to its partners who can then provide mobile Internet services to their customers at these locations. Platform Services: The company licenses its proprietary software and provide software integration and development services to its platform services partners. This enables them to integrate its mobile Internet solution with their product and service offerings, either as a bundled Boingo service or a private labeled offering. Its solution includes its proprietary, patented techniques for wireless signal detection, presentation and network aggregation. Turn-Key Solutions: The company offers its venue partners the ability to implement a turn-key Wi-Fi solution, with no initial investment, through a Wi-Fi network infrastructure that it installs, manages and operates. Its turn-key solutions include various service models that are supported through a mix of retail, military, wholesale Wi-Fi and advertising revenue. Advertising: The company’s platform provides an opportunity for advertisers to reach a targeted base of visitors to its landing pages with sponsored access, promotional programs and display advertising. The company provides advertisers the opportunity to sponsor wireless Internet access to individuals at locations where it manages and operates the Wi-Fi network and locations where it solely provides authorized access to a partner's Wi-Fi network through sponsored access and promotional programs. The company also offers display advertising based on impressions delivered by its platform. Its advertising solution is integrated into Wi-Fi networks not directly managed by Boingo, expanding the addressable market. Network The company designs, builds, monitors and maintains the Wi-Fi network at its managed and operated hotspot locations primarily located in the United States and Europe. The company’s strategic partnership arrangements with approximately 130 network operators allow it to extend its global network to approximately 90 countries worldwide. In 2013, the company acquired Electronic Media Systems, Inc. and Advanced Wireless Group, LLC and its network of 17 managed and operated networks (collectively, AWG). Operations The company provides significant operational support for its managed and operated Wi-Fi hotspots and other hotspots in its network. For its managed and operated Wi-Fi hotspots, the company designs, builds, monitors and maintains the network. For roaming partners, it monitors hotspot uptime and report outages. The company’s Wi-Fi deployments are based on the IEEE 802.11a, b, g, n and ac standards and operate in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz unlicensed spectrum bands. The company designs, builds, and operates DAS networks that provide 2G, 3G, and 4G-LTE services across multiple licensed-frequency bands for all major telecom operators. Customers The company’s DAS customers are telecom operators who pay it one-time build-out fees and recurring access fees for its DAS network, enabling their cellular customers to access these networks. Its wholesale customer relationships are generally governed by multi-year contracts. The company generates revenue from advertisers that seek to reach visitors to the landing pages at its managed and operated network locations with online advertising, promotional and sponsored programs. For the year ended December 31, 2014, entities affiliated with AT&T Inc. accounted for 15% of total revenue Intellectual Property The company has four issued U.S. patents, two of which expire in 2022, and the others of which expire in 2030 and 2033. It has six patent applications pending in the United States. One of the pending U.S. patent applications is also pending in Europe. The company has two issued Japanese patents and two issued Chinese patents, each of which has a maximum term that expires in 2027.
