The company purchases a substantial majority of its wireless devices and accessories from Apple, Motorola Mobility, Samsung, LG Electronics, BlackBerry and HTC. The LTE chipsets used in the company’s 4G LTE-enabled devices are manufactured by various companies, each using its own 4G LTE chipset. To support (Code Division Multiple Access) CDMA-1XRTT and EVDO technologies (with and without 4G LTE), most of its wireless device suppliers rely on Qualcomm Incorporated for the manufacture and supply of chipsets. Technology The company’s primary network technology platforms are 4G LTE and 3G CDMA. In 2014, it commercially launched its mobile voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) service known as voice over LTE (VoLTE). Spectrum The spectrum licenses the company holds can be used for mobile wireless voice and data communications services. The company has licenses to provide these wireless services on portions of the 800 MHz band, also known as cellular spectrum, the 1800-1900 MHz band, also known as personal communication services spectrum, portions of the 700 MHz upper C band and AWS spectrum in the 1700 and 2100 MHz bands, in areas that, collectively, cover nearly all of the population of the United States. Network Equipment and Build-out Alcatel-Lucent and Ericsson are the company’s primary network vendors for its LTE network deployments for macro sites, as well as small cells. The company’s primary CDMA cell site equipment infrastructure vendors are Alcatel-Lucent, which provides approximately half of its CDMA cell site equipment, and Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN) and Ericsson, which together provide nearly all of its remaining cell site equipment. The company also relies on Alcatel-Lucent, NSN and Ericsson for its switching equipment. On February 5, 2015, the company announced an agreement with American Tower pursuant to which American Tower would have the exclusive rights to lease and operate approximately 11,300 of its wireless towers. Under the terms of the leases, American Tower would have exclusive rights to lease and operate the towers over an average term of approximately 28 years. Competition The company competes against other national wireless service providers, including AT&T, Sprint Corporation and T-Mobile USA, as well as various regional wireless service providers. Wireline This segment’s voice, data and video communications products and enhanced services include broadband video and data, corporate networking solutions, data center and cloud services, security and managed network services and local and long distance voice services. The company provides these products and services to consumers in the United States, as well as to carriers, businesses and government customers both in the United States and worldwide. Wireline Service and Product Offerings The company organizes its service and product offerings by the primary customers targeted by these offerings – mass markets, global enterprise and global wholesale. In 2014, the company Wireline segment sold a non-strategic business, which provides communications solutions to various government agencies. Mass Markets Mass Markets operations provide broadband services (including high-speed Internet, FiOS Internet and FiOS Video services), local exchange (basic service and end-user access) and long distance (including regional toll) voice services to residential and small business subscribers. Data Services: The company offers FiOS broadband and high-speed Internet data products with varying throughput speeds, including FiOS Quantum, which includes speeds of 50 megabytes per second (Mbps) or more. In 2014, the company introduced the FiOS Quantum Gateway Wi-Fi router. This router uses dual-band technology, which allows users to perform both high and low bandwidth activities, and enables an Internet experience even when using multiple devices.
