Vale S.A., together with its subsidiaries, operates as a metals and mining company worldwide. The company produces iron ore and iron ore pellets, and nickel. The company also produces manganese ore, ferroalloys, metallurgical and thermal coal, copper, platinum group metals (PGMs), gold, silver, cobalt, potash, phosphates, and other fertilizer nutrients. The company operates large logistics systems in Brazil and other regions of the world, including railroads, maritime terminals and ports, which are integrated with its mining operations. In addition, it has a portfolio of maritime freight assets, floating transfer stations and distribution centers to support the distribution of iron ore worldwide. Directly and through affiliates and joint ventures, the company also has investments in energy and steel businesses. Business Lines Ferrous Minerals business line The company’s ferrous minerals business includes iron ore mining, iron ore pellet production, manganese ore mining, and ferroalloy production. Iron Ore and Iron Ore Pellets Iron Ore Operations The company conducts its iron ore business in Brazil primarily at the parent-company level, through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Mineração Corumbaense Reunida S.A. (MCR) and through the company’s subsidiary, MBR. The company’s mines, all of which are open pit, and their related operations are mainly concentrated in three systems, such as the Southeastern, Southern and Northern Systems, each with its own transportation capabilities. The company also conducts mining operations in the Midwestern System and through Samarco Mineração S.A. (Samarco), a joint venture with an affiliate of BHP Billiton plc (BHP Billiton) in which the company has a 50% equity stake. Iron Ore Pellets Operations The company produces iron ore pellets in Brazil and Oman, directly and through joint ventures. The company also has a 25% interest in two iron ore pelletizing plants in China, Zhuhai YPM Pellet Co., Ltd. (Zhuhai YPM) and Anyang Yu Vale Yongtong Pellet Co., Ltd. (Anyang). The company’s total estimated nominal capacity is 64.2 Mtpy (million metric tons per year), including the full capacity of its pelletizing plants in Oman, but not including its joint ventures Samarco, Zhuhai YPM, and Anyang. The company supplies all of the iron ore requirements of its wholly-owned pellet plants and part of the iron ore requirements for Samarco and Zhuhai YPM. In 2014, the company sold 10.2 million metric tons of run of mine to Samarco and 0.7 million metric tons to Zhuhai YPM. Customers, Sales and Marketing The company supplies all of its iron ore and iron ore pellets (including its share of joint-venture pellet production) to the steel industry. In 2014, the Asian market (primarily Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan), the European market, and the Brazilian market were the primary markets for the company’s blast furnace pellets, while the Middle East, North America, and North Africa were the primary markets for its direct reduction pellets. In addition to offering technical assistance to the company’s customers, it operates sales support offices in Tokyo (Japan), Seoul (South Korea), Singapore, Dubai (the UAE), and Shanghai (China), which support the sales made by Vale International. Competition The company’s major competitors in the Asian market are located in Australia and include subsidiaries and affiliates of BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto Ltd (Rio Tinto), and Fortescue Metals Group Ltd. The company’s principal competitors in the European market are Kumba Iron Ore Limited; Luossavaara Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB); Société Nationale Industrielle et Minière; and Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC), a subsidiary of Rio Tinto. With respect to pellets, the company’s major competitors are LKAB, Arcelor Mittal Mines Canada, IOC, and Bahrain Steel. Manganese Ore and Ferroalloys Manganese Ore Operations and Production The company conducts its manganese mining operations in Brazil through the company and its wholly-owned subsidiaries, Vale Manganês S.A.
