United Continental Holdings, Inc., together with its subsidiaries, provides air transportation services. Network The company transports people and cargo through its mainline operations, which use jet aircraft with approximately 118 seats, and its regional operations. With global air rights in North America, the Asia-Pacific, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America, the company has a comprehensive global route network. The company operates an average of 5,055 flights a day to 373 airports across 6 continents from the hubs at Newark Liberty International Airport (Newark Liberty), Chicago O’Hare International Airport (Chicago O’Hare), Denver International Airport (Denver), George Bush Intercontinental Airport (Houston Bush), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), A.B. Won Pat International Airport (Guam), San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Washington Dulles International Airport (Washington Dulles). Regional: The company has contractual relationships with various regional carriers to provide regional jet and turboprop service branded as United Express. These regional operations are an extension of the company’s mainline network. This regional service complements its operations by carrying traffic that connects to its mainline service and allows flights to smaller cities that cannot be provided economically with mainline aircraft. Republic Airlines, CommutAir Airlines, ExpressJet Airlines, GoJet Airlines, Mesa Airlines, Shuttle America, SkyWest Airlines and Trans States Airlines are all regional carriers, which operate most of their capacity contracted to the company under capacity purchase agreements. The company also has prorate agreements with Hyannis Air Service, Inc., SkyWest and Trans States. Alliances The company has strategic bilateral and multilateral alliances with other airlines, including marketing alliances and joint ventures, which enhance travel options for customers by providing greater time of day coverage to common destinations, additional mileage accrual and redemption opportunities, and expanded global network access. The company is a member of Star Alliance, a global integrated airline network. As of January 1, 2015, Star Alliance carriers served approximately 1,300 airports in 190 countries with approximately 18,500 daily departures. Star Alliance members, in addition to the company, are Adria Airways, Aegean Airlines, Air Canada, Air China, Air India, Air New Zealand, All Nippon Airways (ANA), Asiana Airlines, Austrian Airlines, Avianca, Brussels Airlines, Copa Airlines, Croatia Airlines, EGYPTAIR, Ethiopian Airlines, EVA Air, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, SAS Scandinavian Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways, SWISS, TAP Portugal, THAI Airways International and Turkish Airlines. The company maintains independent marketing alliance agreements with other air carriers unaffiliated with a global alliance, including Aeromar, Aer Lingus, Air Dolomiti, Cape Air, Germanwings, Great Lakes Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Island Air, Jet Airways and Silver Airways. The company also offers a train-to-plane codeshare and frequent flyer alliance with Amtrak from Newark Liberty on select city pairs in the northeastern United States. The company also participates in joint ventures, one with Air Canada and the Lufthansa Group covering transatlantic routes, and another with All Nippon Airways (ANA) covering certain transpacific routes. Loyalty Program: The company’s MileagePlus program builds customer loyalty by offering awards and services to program participants. Members in this program earn mileage credit for flights on United, United Express, airlines in Star Alliance and certain other airlines that participate in the program. Members can also earn miles by purchasing the goods and services of its network of non-airline partners, such as credit card issuers, retail merchants, hotels and car rental companies. Sales and Distribution The company’s airline seat inventory is distributed through the company’s direct channels, traditional travel agencies and on-line travel agencies. Agency sales are primarily sold using global distribution systems. Regulation The company is subject to investigation inquiries by the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Federal Aviation Administration, the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and other U.S. and international regulatory bodies. History The company was founded in 1934. It was formerly known as UAL Corporation and changed its name to United Continental Holdings, Inc. in 2010. The company was incorporated under the laws of the state of Delaware in 1968.
