Tyson Foods, Inc., together with its subsidiaries, produces chicken, beef, pork and prepared foods. Through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Cobb-Vantress, Inc. (Cobb), the company supplies poultry breeding stock worldwide. Segments The company’s operations are conducted in five segments: Chicken, Beef, Pork, Prepared Foods and International. Chicken This segment includes its domestic operations related to raising and processing live chickens into fresh, frozen and value-added chicken products, as well as sales from allied products. Products are marketed domestically to food retailers, foodservice distributors, restaurant operators, hotel chains and noncommercial foodservice establishments, such as schools, healthcare facilities, the military and other food processors, as well as to international export markets. This segment also includes logistics operations to move products through its domestic supply chain and the global operations of its chicken breeding stock subsidiary. Beef This segment includes its operations related to processing live fed cattle and fabricating dressed beef carcasses into primal and sub-primal meat cuts and case-ready products. Products are marketed domestically to food retailers, foodservice distributors, restaurant operators, hotel chains and noncommercial foodservice establishments, such as schools, healthcare facilities, the military and other food processors, as well as to international export markets. This segment also includes sales from allied products, such as hides and meats, as well as logistics operations to move products through the supply chain. Pork This segment includes its operations related to processing live market hogs and fabricating pork carcasses into primal and sub-primal cuts and case-ready products. Products are marketed domestically to food retailers, foodservice distributors, restaurant operators, hotel chains and noncommercial foodservice establishments, such as schools, healthcare facilities, the military and other food processors, as well as to international export markets. This segment also includes its live swine group, related allied product processing activities and logistics operations to move products through the supply chain. Prepared Foods This segment includes operations related to manufacturing and marketing frozen and refrigerated food products and logistics operations to move products through the supply chain. Products primarily include pepperoni, bacon, sausage, beef and pork pizza toppings, pizza crusts, flour and corn tortilla products, appetizers, prepared meals, ethnic foods, soups, sauces, side dishes, meat dishes, breadsticks and processed meats. Products are marketed domestically to food retailers, foodservice distributors, restaurant operators, hotel chains and noncommercial foodservice establishments, such as schools, healthcare facilities, the military and other food processors, as well as to international export markets. In 2014, the company acquired and consolidated The Hillshire Brands Company (Hillshire Brands), a manufacturer and marketer of branded, convenient foods, which includes brands, such as Jimmy Dean, Ball Park, Hillshire Farm, State Fair, Van's, Sara Lee frozen bakery and Chef Pierre pies, as well as artisanal brands Aidells, Gallo Salame, and Golden Island premium jerky. International This segment includes its foreign operations primarily related to raising and processing live chickens into fresh, frozen and value-added chicken products in Brazil, China, India and Mexico. Products are marketed in each respective country to food retailers, foodservice distributors, restaurant operators, hotel chains, noncommercial foodservice establishments and live markets, as well as to other international export markets. Foreign Operations The company sold products in approximately 130 countries in 2014. Its major sales markets include Brazil, Canada, Central America, China, the European Union, Japan, Mexico, the Middle East, South Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam. The company has the following foreign operations: Tyson de Mexico, a Mexican subsidiary, is a vertically-integrated poultry production company. Cobb-Vantress, a chicken breeding stock subsidiary, has business interests in Argentina, Brazil, China, the Dominican Republic, India, Japan, the Netherlands, Peru, the Philippines, Russia, Spain, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Turkey, the United Kingdom and Venezuela. Tyson do Brazil, a Brazilian subsidiary, is a vertically-integrated poultry production operation. Tyson Rizhao, located in Rizhao, China, is a vertically-integrated poultry production operation. Tyson Dalong, a joint venture in China in which the company has a majority interest, is a chicken further processing facility. Tyson Nantong, located in Nantong, China, is a vertically-integrated poultry production operation. Godrej Tyson Foods, a joint venture in India in which the company has a majority interest, is a poultry processing business. Customers Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. accounted for 14.6% of the company’s 2014 consolidated sales. Research and Development The company conducts continuous research and development activities to improve product development, to automate manual processes in its processing plants and growout operations, and to improve chicken breeding stock. Its research and development costs totaled $52 million in 2014. Regulations In addition to its own internal Food Safety and Quality Assurance oversight and review, the company’s chicken, beef, pork and prepared foods products are subject to inspection prior to distribution, primarily by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The company is also a participant in the United States Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) program and is subject to the Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures and the Public Health Security and Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Act of 2002. History Tyson Foods, Inc. was founded in 1935.
