The company provides mobile communications services using 4G Long-Term Evolution (LTE), Evolved High Speed Packet Access (HSPA+), Universal Mobile Telecommunications Systems (UMTS), General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE), Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technologies. The company also offers a selection of wireless devices, including handsets, tablets and other mobile communication devices, and accessories. Additionally, it provides reinsurance for handset insurance policies and extended warranty contracts offered to the company’s mobile communications customers through a wholly-owned single-parent captive insurance company. Services and Products The company provides wireless communication services through various service plan options. It also offers a selection of wireless devices, including smartphones, tablets and other mobile communication devices, which are manufactured by various suppliers. Services, devices and accessories are offered directly to consumers through its owned and operated retail stores, as well as through its Websites. In addition, the company sells devices and accessories to dealers and other third party distributors for resale through independent third-party retail outlets and various third-party Websites. The company’s service plan options include its Value and Simple Choice (Simple Choice) plans, which allow customers to subscribe for wireless services separately from the purchase of a handset. The company introduced its Simple Choice plans as part of phase 1.0 of its Un-carrier proposition in 2013, which eliminated annual service contracts and simplified the lineup of consumer rate plans to one affordable plan for unlimited voice and messaging services with the option to add data services. Distribution The company had approximately 62,000 total points of distribution, including approximately 10,000 T-Mobile and MetroPCS branded locations and 52,000 third-party and national retailer locations, as well as distribution through Websites, as of December 31, 2014. Customers The company provides wireless communication services to three primary categories of customers: branded postpaid, branded prepaid and wholesale. Branded postpaid customers include customers that are qualified to pay after incurring wireless communication service. Branded prepaid customers include customers who pay in advance. The company’s branded prepaid customers include customers of the T-Mobile, MetroPCS and certain partner brands. The company’s wholesale customers include Machine-to-Machine (M2M) and Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNO) that operate on the T-Mobile network. As of December 31, 2014, it provided services to approximately 55 million customers. Strategy The company’s strategy includes the following elements: un-carrier value proposition; unlimited data, no annual service contract; international roaming and tablets un-leashed; contract freedom; test drive; Music Freedom; Wi-Fi Un-leashed; and Data Stash. Regulations Pursuant to its authority under the Communications Act of 1934, as amended, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulates various aspects of the company’s business, including licensing, construction, the operation and use of its network, modifications of network, control and ownership of business, the sale of certain business assets, domestic roaming arrangements and interconnection agreements.
