Hospital Operations and Other This segment includes hospitals, ancillary outpatient facilities and related businesses; and health plans and accountable care networks. Hospitals, Ancillary Outpatient Facilities and Related Businesses: As of December 31, 2015, the company’s subsidiaries operated 86 hospitals, including 3 academic medical centers, 2 children’s hospitals, 2 specialty hospitals and 2 critical access hospitals, with a total of 22,525 licensed beds, serving primarily urban and suburban communities in 14 states. Its subsidiaries owned 67 of those hospitals, 12 were owned by entities that are, in turn, jointly owned by a Tenet subsidiary and a strategic partner or group of physicians, and 7 were owned by third parties and leased by its subsidiaries. In addition, at December 31, 2015, the company’s subsidiaries operated a long-term acute care hospital and a skilled nursing facility and owned or leased and operated various medical office buildings, all of which were located on, or nearby, its hospital campuses. As of December 31, 2015, the company’s Hospital Operations and other segment also included 174 outpatient centers, the majority of which are provider-based diagnostic imaging centers, freestanding urgent care centers, satellite emergency departments and provider-based ambulatory surgery centers; approximately 700 physician practices; and 6 health plans. Each of the company’s general hospitals offers acute care services, operating and recovery rooms, radiology services, respiratory therapy services, clinical laboratories and pharmacies; in addition, most have intensive care, critical care and/or coronary care units, physical therapy, and orthopedic, oncology and outpatient services. Many of its hospitals provide tertiary care services, such as open-heart surgery, neonatal intensive care and neurosciences, and some also offer quaternary care in areas, such as heart, liver, kidney and bone marrow transplants. The company’s children’s hospitals provide tertiary and quaternary pediatric services, including bone marrow and kidney transplants, as well as burn services. Many of the company’s hospitals and physician practices also offer a range of clinical research studies, giving patients access to innovative care. The company is helping its hospitals and physicians participate in medical research that is consistent with state and federal regulations and complies with clinical practice guidelines. Clinical research programs relate to a range of ailments, including cardiovascular disease, pulmonary disease, musculoskeletal disorders, neurological disorders, genitourinary disease and various cancers, as well as experimental drug and medical device studies.
