Segments The company’s segments include U.S. Cellular, TDS Telecom’s Wireline, Cable and HMS operations. U.S. Cellular This segment provides wireless telecommunications services. The company provides wireless telecommunications service in Knoxville, Tennessee and Tulsa, Oklahoma, U.S. The company has expanded its consolidated wireless networks and customer service operations to cover portions of 23 states. The company’s ownership interests in wireless licenses include both consolidated and investment interests in licenses covering portions of 30 states and a total population of 58.0 million at December 31, 2013. As of December 31, 2013, the company provided telecommunications services to approximately 4.8 million wireless customers. Products and Services Wireless Services: The company’s postpaid customers are able to choose from various national plans with voice, messaging and data usage options and pricing that are designed to fit different customer needs, usage patterns and budgets. The company offers Shared Data plans that include unlimited voice minutes and text messaging combined with various data usage options. Under these plans, customers can share data usage among all users and devices connected to the plan. It also offers prepaid service plans, which include voice, messaging and data options in various ways, for a monthly fee. The company’s portfolio of smartphones, tablets and other connected devices is a key part of its strategy to deliver wireless devices which allow customers to stay productive, entertained and connected on the go. Its smartphone messaging, data and Internet services allow customers to access the Web and social network sites, email, text, picture and video message, utilize turn-by-turn GPS navigation, and browse and download various applications to customize their wireless devices to fit their lifestyles. The company offers smartphone and non-smartphone users various services, which run over its 4G long-term evolution (4G LTE) and third generation (3G) networks. In 2013, U.S. Cellular launched various new services, such as Family Protector and an international dialing plan while continuing to offer enhanced multimedia services, including digital radio, Mobile TV and gaming. The company offers data services and app-like experiences to non-smartphone devices via a technology known as Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless, which enables customers to access news, weather, sports, information, games, ring tones and other services. Wireless Devices: The company offers a range of wireless devices, such as handsets, modems, mobile hotspots, home phone and tablets for use by its customers. It offers wireless devices that are compatible with some or all of its 4G LTE, 3G and 2G networks and all are compliant with the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) enhanced wireless 911 (E-911) requirements.
