TIM Participações S.A. provides mobile telecommunication services in Brazil. The company, through its subsidiaries in various telecommunications markets throughout Brazil, operates mobile, fixed and long distance telephony, data transmission and Internet services. The company, through its global system mobile (GSM) network, serves approximately 95% of the urban population of Brazil, with a presence in approximately 3,404 municipalities. It offers data coverage throughout Brazil, with its general packet radio services technology (GPRS), covering 100% of its coverage area and its EDGE (enhanced data rates for global evolution) technology reaching 94.8% of its coverage area, in addition to its third generation (3G) network covering approximately 78% of the urban population of Brazil. The company’s international roaming agreements include approximately 450 networks available in approximately 200 countries. Its fiber network extends from northern to southern Brazil, with an extensive area network, or backbone, of approximately 47,000 kilometers, and metropolitan area networks, or backhaul. As of December 31, 2013, it had approximately 11,000 points of sales through premium shops and dealers (exclusive or multi-brand) and consolidated partnerships with large retail chains. In addition to these retail outlets, its customers have access to prepaid phone services through supermarkets, newsstands, and other small retailers as an alternative channel to access its products and services, totaling approximately 430,000 points of sale spread throughout Brazil. Value Added Services The company offers, directly or through agreements entered into with third parties, value-added services, including short message services (SMSs) or text messaging, multimedia messaging services, push-mail, video call, turbo mail, wireless application protocol downloads, Web browsing, business data solutions, songs, games, TV access, voicemail, conference calling, chats, and other content to its postpaid and prepaid customers. The company works with Telecom Italia S.p.A., which makes investment in developing new products, new technologies, and platforms. Its principal value-added services comprise: TIM CloudConnect: A solution for small and midsize companies, which would be offered at an accessible price and would enable file sharing, social collaboration and basic online CRM on a mobile platform with all of the features that managers and employees require to speed up communications and further improve customer relations. TIM CloudConnect is built on a partnership with Salesforce, a cloud platform for social and mobile business apps. TIM Radar: A tracking services for all a company’s devices, which also permits the company to send unlimited SMS to employees to provide them with instructions, directions, and other relevant messages. TIM Radar would help companies improve their deliveries and pick-ups. InfoTIM: A corporate SMS service, which allows corporate clients to send and receive SMS to their customer base through the TIM VAS Platform. InfoTIM is an application to peer service. Gestor Web: A control tool that enables the company’s corporate clients to manage and control the voice access use of their employees through an exclusive area of the TIM Website. Data Transmission The company also offers GPRS to its postpaid and prepaid subscribers through its GSM network. GPRS/EDGE are non-voice value-added services that allow information to be sent and received across a mobile network. The company offers 3G/high speed packet access (HSPA) services, which is a technology that improves the portfolio of value-added services, with higher speed of downloads. In 2013, it launched the Mobile BroadBand program, which combines high capacity backhaul with advanced features of HSPA, such as HSPA+ and Dual Carrier, reaching approximately 42Mbps per cell. In 2013, the company partnered with Cisco and Celcite to improve network quality, particular with respect to data traffic.
