Chemical and Mining Company of Chile Inc. operates as a producer of potassium nitrate, iodine, and lithium chemicals. The company produces specialty plant nutrients, iodine and iodine derivatives, lithium and lithium derivatives, potassium chloride, potassium sulfate, and certain industrial chemicals (including industrial nitrates and solar salt). Its products are sold in approximately 115 countries through its worldwide distribution network. The company’s products are primarily derived from mineral deposits found in northern Chile. It mines and processes caliche ore and brine deposits. Products The company’s products are divided into six categories, such as specialty plant nutrients; iodine and its derivatives; lithium and its derivatives; potassium chloride and potassium sulfate; industrial chemicals; and other commodity fertilizers. Specialty Plant Nutrition The company produces four principal types of specialty plant nutrition products, such as potassium nitrate, sodium nitrate, sodium potassium nitrate, and specialty blends. It also sells other specialty fertilizers, including trading of third party products. All of these specialty plant nutrition products are used in either solid or liquid form primarily on crops, such as vegetables, fruits, industrial crops, flowers, cotton, and others. They are used in crops that employ modern agricultural techniques, such as hydroponics, greenhousing, fertigation (where fertilizer is dissolved in water prior to irrigation), and foliar application. According to the type of use or application that the company’s products are marketed under the brands include Ultrasol (fertigation), Qrop (open field application), Speedfol (foliar application), and Allganic (organic farming). Marketing and Customers: In 2013, the company sold its specialty plant nutrients in approximately 90 countries. It sells its specialty plant nutrition products outside Chile primarily through its own worldwide network of representative offices and through its distribution affiliates. In addition, the company sells specialty plant nutrition products directly to some of its customers. Its customers are located in both the northern and southern hemispheres. Fertilizer Sales in Chile: The company markets specialty plant nutrition products in Chile through Soquimich Comercial S.A., either as a standalone product or in blends with other imported products, in particular triple super phosphate and diammonium phosphate. Soquimich Comercial S.A. sells imported fertilizers to farmers in Chile principally for use in the production of sugar beets, cereals, industrial crops, potatoes, grapes, and other fruits. Majority of the fertilizers that Soquimich Comercial S.A. imports are purchased on a spot basis from different countries in the world, including China, Mexico, and Venezuela. Competition: In the potassium nitrate market, the company’s major competitor is Haifa Chemicals Ltd. (Haifa), in Israel, which is a subsidiary of Trans Resources International Inc. Iodine and its Derivatives The company produces iodine and iodine derivatives, which are used in a range of medical, pharmaceutical, agricultural, and industrial applications, including X-ray contrast media, polarizing films for liquid crystal display, antiseptics, biocides, and disinfectants, in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, herbicides, electronics, pigments, and dye components. Iodine is also added in the form of potassium iodate or potassium iodide to edible salt to prevent iodine deficiency disorders. The company produces iodine, and through a joint venture with Ajay Chemicals Inc., a U.S.-based company, it produces organic and inorganic iodine derivatives. Ajay-SQM Group (ASG) has production plants in the United States, Chile, and France. ASG is an inorganic and organic iodine derivatives producer. Marketing and Customers: In 2013, the company sold its iodine products to approximately 300 customers in approximately 70 countries.
