Segments The company’s segments include Automotive; Information & Communications; Electronics; Electric Wire & Cable Energy; and Industrial Materials & Others. Automotive Segment The Automotive Segment includes wiring harnesses, anti-vibration rubber products, and other automotive parts. The company’s wiring harness business comprises a total of 95 companies handling marketing, manufacturing and development in 30 countries around the world. Its subsidiary, Sumitomo Wiring Systems, Ltd., handles wiring harness design and production. Information & Communications Segment The Information & Communications segment comprises optical fibers and cables, photonic products and network equipment. In photonic products, the company expanded its product lineup of 10-Gigabit Ethernet transceivers, the core component of Next Generation Networking (NGN) equipment. In networking equipment, the company is building equipment for fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) technology, through investment in new access product technologies, such as very high bit-rate digital subscriber line (VDSL) and gigabit Ethernet-passive optical network (GE-PON). Electronics Segment The Electronics segment comprises electronic wires, flexible printed circuits (FPCs), compound semiconductors and finepolymer products. The company is developing and expanding marketing of high value-added products, such as gallium nitride (GaN) substrates and ultrafine coaxial cable. Electric Wire & Cable, Energy Segment The Electric Wire & Cable, Energy segment comprises copper wire rods, materials for electronic components, irradiated products and flexible printed circuits (FPCs), electric power cables, and magnet wires. Major subsidiaries are Nissin Electric Co., Ltd. and Sumitomo Densetsu Co., Ltd. Industrial Materials & Others Segment The Industrial Materials & Others segment comprises hard materials, special steel wires, sintered parts and other products. Geographical Segments The company’s geographical segments include: Japan, Americas (U.S.A. and others); Asia (China, Thailand, Indonesia and others); and Europe and Others (Germany, U.K., Italy and others). Acquisitions In September 2007, the company acquired Sumitomo Electric Sintered Components (Germany) GmbH. Significant Events On October 16, 2008, Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd. announced that it has agreed to set up three joint ventures with China's Futong Group Co., Ltd. to beef up its optical fiber business there. The joint ventures are Hangzhou SEI-Futong Optical Fiber Co. of Zhejiang Province, Chengdu SEI-Futong Optical Cable Co. of Sichuan Province, and Hong Kong SEI-Futong Holding, Ltd. On August 16, 2009, Tokai Rubber Industries Ltd. (TRI), Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd. (SEI), and Ktk Group Co. Ltd. (KTK) have agreed to form a joint venture to manufacture and sell anti-vibration rubber and air springs for rolling stock in China. In September 2009, the company and Tokai Rubber Industries Ltd. have agreed to establish a joint venture with Ktk Group Co., Ltd. in Jiangsu, China to manufacture and sell anti-vibration rubber and air springs for rolling stock. History Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. was incorporated in 1920.
