The company also supplied rehabilitation and respiratory therapy to approximately 1,700 locations in 45 states and the District of Columbia as of December 31, 2015. In addition, the company provides a complement of administrative and consultative services to its affiliated operators through its administrative services subsidiary and to third-party operators with whom the company contracts through its management services subsidiary. There were 49 facilities subject to such management services agreements with unaffiliated or jointly owned skilled nursing facility operators as of December 31, 2015. Operations As of December 31, 2015, the company offered inpatient services through its network of 531 skilled nursing and assisted/senior living facilities across 34 states, consisting of 475 skilled nursing facilities and 56 stand-alone assisted/senior living facilities. Of the 531 facilities, 411 are leased, 71 are owned, 43 are managed and 6 are joint ventures. Collectively, these skilled nursing and assisted/senior living facilities have 62,031 licensed beds, approximately 63% of which are concentrated in the states of California, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia. The company also owns five skilled nursing facilities in California that the company leases to an unaffiliated third party operator. The company’s skilled nursing and assisted/senior living facilities are generally clustered in large urban or suburban markets. The company leased 77% of its facilities as of December 31, 2015. The company’s services focus primarily on the medical and physical issues facing elderly patients and are provided by its skilled nursing facilities, assisted/senior living communities, integrated and third-party rehabilitation therapy business, and other ancillary services. Segments As of December 31, 2015, the company had three operating segments: Inpatient Services, which includes the operation of skilled nursing facilities and assisted/senior living facilities; Rehabilitation Therapy Services, which includes the company’s integrated and third-party rehabilitation and respiratory therapy services; and Other Services. Inpatient Services segment Skilled Nursing Facilities As of December 31, 2015, the company’s skilled nursing facilities provided skilled nursing care at 475 regionally clustered facilities, having 56,575 licensed beds, in 34 states. The company has developed programs for, and actively markets its services to, high-acuity patients who are typically admitted to its facilities as they recover from strokes, other neurological conditions, cardiovascular and respiratory ailments, joint replacements and other muscular or skeletal disorders. The company uses interdisciplinary teams of experienced medical professionals to provide services prescribed by physicians. These teams include registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, certified nursing assistants and other professionals who provide individualized nursing care. Many of the company’s skilled nursing facilities are equipped to provide specialty care, such as on-site dialysis, ventilator care, cardiac and pulmonary management. The company also provides standard services to each of its skilled nursing patients, including room and board, special nutritional programs, social services, recreational activities and related healthcare and other services. The company’s PowerBack Rehabilitation branded facilities are 100% short stay skilled nursing facilities, which deliver a rehabilitation regimen in accommodations primarily designed to serve high-acuity patients.
