channels to attract new subscribers of wireless services, including direct sales representatives whose efforts are focused on marketing and selling wireless services primarily to mid-sized to large businesses and government agencies; retail outlets, owned and operated by the company, which focus on sales to the consumer market; indirect sales agents and third-party retailers that primarily consist of local and national non-affiliated dealers and independent contractors that market and sell services to businesses and the consumer market; and subscriber-convenient channels, including Internet sales and telesales. The company markets its postpaid services under the Sprint brand. It markets its prepaid services under the Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile, and Assurance Wireless brands as a means to provide value-driven prepaid service plans to particular markets. The company’s wholesale customers are resellers of its wireless services rather than end-use subscribers and market their products and services using their brands. Although the company markets its services using traditional print and television advertising, it also provides exposure to its brand names and wireless services through various sponsorships, including the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing and the National Basketball Association. Competition The company’s competitors include AT&T, Inc.; Verizon Wireless; T-Mobile; and TracFone Wireless. Wireline segment This segment provides a suite of wireline voice and data communications services to other communications companies and targeted business and consumer subscribers. The company also provides voice, data, and IP communication services to its Wireless segment, and IP and other services to cable multiple system operators (MSOs). Cable MSOs resell its local and long distance services and use its back office systems and network assets in support of their telephone service provided through cable facilities primarily to residential end-use subscribers. Services and Products The company’s services and products include domestic and international data communications using various protocols, such as multiprotocol label switching technologies (MPLS), IP, managed network services, voice over IP, session initiated protocol, and traditional voice services. Its IP services could also be combined with wireless services. Such services include its Sprint Mobile Integration service, which enables a wireless handset to operate as part of a subscriber's wireline voice network, and its DataLink service, which uses the company’s wireless networks to connect a subscriber location into their primarily wireline wide-area IP/MPLS data network, making it easy for businesses to adapt their network to changing business requirements. In addition to providing services to its business customers, the wireline network is carrying increasing amounts of voice and data traffic for its Wireless segment as a result of improving usage by its wireless subscribers. The company also provides wholesale voice local and long distance services to cable MSOs, which they offer as part of their bundled service offerings, as well as traditional voice and data services for their enterprise use. It also provides voice services to residential consumers. This segment markets and sells its services primarily through direct sales representatives. Competition This segment competes with AT&T, Inc.; Verizon Communications Inc.; CenturyLink, Inc.; and Level 3 Communications, Inc. Acquisitions In 2013, the company completed the acquisition of the remaining equity interests in Clearwire Corporation and its consolidated subsidiary, Clearwire Communications LLC. Legislative and Regulatory Developments The Communications Act of 1934 preempts states from regulating the rates or entry of commercial mobile radio service providers, such as those in the company’s Wireless segment, and imposes licensing and technical requirements, including provisions related to the acquisition, assignment or transfer of radio licenses. The Federal Communications Commission requirements impose operating and other restrictions on the company’s wire
