Royal Dutch Shell plc operates as an independent oil and gas company. The company’s segments include Upstream and Downstream. Upstream This segment explores for and extracts crude oil and natural gas, often in joint arrangements with international and national oil and gas companies. This includes the extraction of bitumen from mined oil sands, which it converts into synthetic crude oil. The company liquefies natural gas by cooling it and transports the liquefied natural gas (LNG) to customers worldwide. The company also converts natural gas to liquids (GTL) to provide high-quality fuels and other products, and it markets and trades crude oil and natural gas (including LNG) in support of its Upstream businesses. Upstream International The company’s Upstream Americas business manages its Upstream activities in North and South America. It explores for and recovers crude oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids (NGLs), transports oil and gas and operates the upstream and midstream infrastructure necessary to deliver oil and gas to market. Upstream International also manages the company’s Upstream LNG and GTL businesses. It manages its operations primarily by line of business, with this structure overlaying country organizations. Upstream Americas Upstream Americas manages the Upstream businesses in North and South America. Upstream Americas also extracts bitumen from oil sands that is converted into synthetic crude oil.
