Papa John’s International, Inc. operates and franchises pizza delivery and carryout restaurants. The company, in certain international markets, operates and franchises dine-in and delivery restaurants under the trademark ‘Papa John’s’. As of December 29, 2013, there were 4,428 Papa John’s restaurants in operation, consisting of 723 company-owned and 3,705 franchised restaurants operating domestically in all 50 states and in 34 countries. The company-owned restaurants include 191 restaurants operated under 4 joint venture arrangements and 58 units in Beijing and north China. Segments The company operates in five segments: domestic Company-owned restaurants, domestic commissaries, North America franchising, international operations, and all other. The domestic Company-owned restaurant segment consists of the operations of all domestic Company-owned restaurants. It is engaged in the retail sale of pizza and side items, such as breadsticks, cheesesticks, chicken poppers, chicken wings, dessert pizza and soft drinks to the general public. The domestic commissary segment consists of the operations of its regional dough production and product distribution centers. It is engaged in the sale and distribution of food and paper products to domestic Company-owned and franchised restaurants. The North America franchising segment consists of its franchise sales and support activities, It is engaged in the sale of franchise and development rights, and collection of royalties from its franchisees located in the United States and Canada. The international operations segment principally consists of company-owned restaurants and distribution sales to franchised Papa John’s restaurants located in the United Kingdom, Mexico and China. The all other segment engages in the sale, principally to company-owned and franchised restaurants, of printing and promotional items, risk management services, and information systems and related services used in restaurant operations, including online and other technology-based ordering platforms. Strategy The main elements of its strategy include the following: high quality menu offerings; efficient operating system; commitment to team member training and development; national advertising via television, print, direct mail, digital, mobile marketing and social media channels; and strong franchise system. Regulations The company’s full-service QC Centers are licensed and subject to regulation by state and local health and fire codes, and the operation of its trucks is subject to Department of Transportation regulations. The company is also subject to federal and state environmental regulations. The company is subject to Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulation and various state laws regulating the offer and sale of franchises. The FTC requires the company to furnish to prospective franchisees a franchise disclosure document containing prescribed information. National, state and local government regulations or initiatives, including health care legislation, ‘living wage,’ menu labeling, or other or proposed regulations and increases in minimum wage rates affect Papa John’s as well as others within the restaurant industry. Trademarks The company owns the federal registration of the trademark ‘Papa John’s.’ The company also has registered ‘Pizza Papa John’s and design’ (logo), ‘Better Ingredients. Better Pizza.’, ‘Pizza Papa John’s Better Ingredients. Better Pizza. and design’ and ‘Papa Rewards’ as trademarks and service marks. The company also has applied to register its primary trademark, ‘Pizza Papa John’s and design,’ in approximately 100 foreign countries and the European Community. In addition, the company has registered and maintains Internet domain names, including ‘’ History Papa John’s International, Inc. was founded in 1985.
