The company owns Teton Outfitters, LLC (doing business as Klim), which specializes in premium technical riding gear for the snowmobile and motorcycle industries. Apparel is designed to its specifications, purchased from independent vendors and sold by the company through its dealers and distributors, and online under its brand names. In 2014, the company acquired Kolpin Outdoors, Inc., an aftermarket brand delivering purpose-built and universal-fit ORV accessories and lifestyle products. It also acquired certain assets of LSI Products Inc. and Armor Holdings LLC, an aftermarket accessories company that specializes in accessories for performance side-by-side vehicles and ATVs. These two 2014 acquisitions added aftermarket accessory brands to its PG&A activities. Sales and Marketing The company’s products are sold through a network of approximately 1,750 independent dealers in North America, through 23 subsidiaries and approximately 85 distributors in approximately 100 countries outside of North America. The company sells its snowmobiles directly to dealers in the snowbelt regions of the United States and Canada. Majority dealers and distributors of its snowmobiles also distribute its ORVs. The company also sells its ORVs through lawn and garden and farm implement dealers. With the exception of France, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Norway, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Spain, China, India, Mexico, and Brazil, sales of the company’s non-SV products in Europe and other offshore markets are handled through independent distributors. GEM has approximately 250 dealers. Goupil and Aixam sell directly to customers in France, through subsidiaries in certain Western European countries and through various dealers and distributors for markets outside such countries. In 2013, the company entered into a partnership with Ariens Company (Ariens), a Brillion, Wisconsin based manufacturer of outdoor power equipment. Through the partnership, the company anticipates leveraging each other's dealer networks, sharing certain technologies, research and development and supplying Ariens with a work vehicle to sell through its dealer network. The company sells clothing and accessories through its e-commerce sites, such as polaris.com, indianmotorcycle.com, klim.com, kolpin.com, and proarmor.com. Research and Development The company expended $148.5 million for research and development activities in 2014. Product Safety and Regulation The company is a member of the Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association, which is established to promote the safe and responsible use of side-by-side vehicles also known as recreational off-highway vehicles, a category that includes its RANGER and RZR side-by-side vehicles. The company is a member of the International Snowmobile Manufacturers Association, a trade association formed to promote safety in the manufacture and use of snowmobiles, among other things.
