The company operates four retail stores, located in Huntington Beach, Santa Monica and Torrance, California and Chicago, Illinois, whose target customers are consumers and small businesses residing or located in the local areas. The retail stores operate under the MacMall brand. Segments The company operates under three segments - Commercial, Public Sector and MacMall. The Commercial segment sells complex products, services and solutions to commercial businesses in the United States, using multiple sales channels, including a field relationship-based selling model, an outbound phone based sales force, a field services organization and an online extranet. The Public Sector segment consists of sales made primarily to federal, state and local governments, as well as educational institutions. The Public Sector segment utilizes an outbound phone and field relationship-based selling model, as well as contract and bid business development teams and an online extranet. The MacMall segment consists of sales made under MacMall brand name via telephone, the Internet and four retail stores to consumers, small businesses and creative professionals, and sales made under OnSale and eCost brand names via the Internet and inbound phone-based sales forces. Products and Merchandising The company offers technology products and solutions, as well as consumer electronics equipment and other consumer products. It screens and selects new products and manufacturers based on the market opportunity and technology adoption trends within targeted customer markets. It offers customers other value-added services, such as custom configured systems, software licensing asset management, image management, product asset tagging and asset disposal services. Services The company’s services are available to commercial and public sector customers and span the entire IT life cycle. These services include the following: assessment and planning services; data center hosting services; software hosting services; remote systems monitoring and management; IMAC and deployment services; end-user desktop services; managed print services; recycling and disposal services; change management consulting services; training; project management; and design and consulting. Strategy The main elements of the company’s strategy are as follows: increase sales and marketing productivity; develop and provide leading edge, value added services and solutions offerings; leverage strong partnerships with key vendors; identify and drive further operational efficiencies; and selectively pursue strategic acquisitions. Sales and Marketing The company sells primarily to customers in the United States, and maintains offices throughout the United States, as well as in Montreal, Canada and Manila, Philippines. Regulations The company’s businesses are subject to various regulatory and legal requirements, such as the Mail or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule and other related regulations promulgated by the Federal Trade Commission and other laws and regulations applicable to commerce on the Internet and laws and regulations of the federal government related to procurement of products and services and sales to the government. Competition The company competes with companies that can be divided into several broad categories: other technology solution providers and direct marketers, including CDW, Insight Enterprises and PC Connection; large value added resellers such as CompuCom Systems, Pomeroy IT Solutions and World Wide Technology; government resellers such as CDWG and GovConnection; computer retail stores and resellers, including superstores such as Best Buy, Office Depot and Staples; hardware and software vendors such as Apple and Dell Computer that sell or are increasing sales directly to end users; online resellers, such as, and; and software focused resellers such as Soft Choice and Software House International.
