Nokia Networks Nokia Networks, through its portfolio of products and services, addresses a market described as ‘mobile infrastructure and related services’. Nokia Networks’ portfolio ranges from the hardware components of networks used by mobile operators, such as base stations, to software solutions that support mobile networks, such as the core software that underpins the operations of an operator. Additionally, Nokia Networks provides the services to plan, implement, run, and upgrade operators’ networks. Nokia Networks has a primary position in all generations of radio network technologies (2G, 3G (third generation mobile communications), and 4G (fourth generation mobile communications)) and the underlying core networks software. In 3G, Nokia Networks serves various operators than any of its rivals, with approximately 1 billion subscribers connected through its 3G networks. In LTE (long-term evolution), Nokia Networks had 162 commercial contracts in 2014, and it is a major LTE radio supplier to 15 major operators. Nokia Networks also manages 550 million subscribers in approximately 100 operator networks and approximately 1 billion network elements through its Global Delivery Centers. Approximately 600 customers worldwide with a total of approximately 5 billion subscriptions use Nokia Networks’ equipment and services, among them majority of the world’s primary mobile operators, including Bharti Airtel, China Mobile, Deutsche Telekom, NTT DoCoMo Inc., SoftBank, Sprint, Telefónica UK, Verizon, and Vodafone. Nokia Networks has two segments, Mobile Broadband and Global Services. The Mobile Broadband segment This segment provides its customers with flexible network solutions for mobile voice and data services through its Radio and Core clusters. The Radio cluster covers all technology generations—GSM (global system for mobile communications), CDMA (code division multiple access), WCDMA (wideband CDMA), and LTE—and is investing in research in LTE-Advanced and fifth generation mobile communications. The Core cluster has a mobile switching portfolio, as well as voice and packet core solutions. The Core portfolio is based on Nokia Networks’ cloud-ready software and could scale for the requirements of data growth and Internet of Things. The Core cluster has expertise in customer experience management, virtualization, and software-rich solutions. Security is a pressing topic for operators and Nokia Networks opened its mobile broadband security center in Berlin, Germany. Other major trends addressed by the Mobile Broadband segment include cloud computing, analytics, big data and multimedia content. The new partnering unit, which is part of Mobile Broadband, exists to help Nokia Networks achieve its goals through partnering with recognized market leaders. The Global Services segment This segment intends to provide mobile operators with the solutions they need to create and maintain networks. This segment comprises five business lines. The Network Implementation business line provides customers with the services they need to build, expand, or modernize a communications network. The Care business line undertakes software and hardware maintenance and provides training to help the company’s customers improve their networks. Within the Managed Services business line, Nokia Networks offers services, such as network operations and service operations, which help its customers manage service lifecycles and improve their subscribers’ experience (by using analytics to improve their predictive services).
