The company leases the Chicago to Manhattan, Illinois, line to the Commuter Rail Division of the Regional Transportation Authority of Northeast Illinois (METRA). It operates freight service over lines with significant ongoing commuter passenger operations, and conducts freight operations over trackage owned or leased by: Amtrak, New Jersey Transit, Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, Metro-North Commuter Railroad Company, and Maryland Department of Transportation. Noncarrier Operations The company’s noncarrier subsidiaries engage principally in the acquisition, leasing, and management of coal, oil, gas and minerals; the development of commercial real estate; telecommunications; and the leasing or sale of rail property and equipment. Track Maintenance: Of the 36,119 total miles of track operated, the company is responsible for maintaining 28,957 miles, with the remainder being operated under trackage rights from other parties responsible for maintenance.
