The company’s Louisiana operations are served by truck and barge from nearby refineries. Ammonia The company uses ammonia together with phosphoric acid to produce DAP, MAP, and MicroEssentials. The company’s Florida ammonia needs are supplied by offshore producers, under multi-year contracts. In addition, the company has a 50% interest in Gulf Marine Solutions, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Gulf Sulphur Services. Florida Land Holdings The company is a major landowner in the state of Florida, which has in the past been considered one of the fastest areas of population growth in the United States. The company owns land comprising approximately 291,278 acres held in fee simple title in central Florida, and has the right to mine additional properties, which contain phosphate rock reserves. The company’s real property assets are concentrates plants, port facilities, phosphate mines and other property, which the company has acquired through its presence in Florida. Potash segment This segment mines and processes potash in Canada and the United States, and sells potash in North America and internationally. The company’s potash products are marketed worldwide to crop nutrient manufacturers, distributors and retailers; and are also used in the manufacturing of mixed crop nutrients, and to a lesser extent, in animal feed ingredients. The company also sells potash to customers for industrial use. In addition, the company’s potash products are used for de-icing and as a water softener regenerant. In 2015, the company operated three potash mines in Canada, including two shaft mines with a total of three production shafts and one solution mine, as well as one potash shaft mine in the United States. The company also owns related refineries at each of the mines. Canadian Mines The company operates three Canadian potash facilities all located in the southern half of the province of Saskatchewan, including its solution mine at Belle Plaine, two interconnected mine shafts at its Esterhazy shaft mine and its shaft mine at Colonsay. The United States Mines In the United States, the company has a shaft mine located in Carlsbad, New Mexico. Effective January 2015, the company produced a double sulfate of potash magnesia product, which the company markets under its brand name K-Mag, at its Carlsbad facility. At the Carlsbad facility, the company mines and refines potash from 77,141 acres of mineral rights. International Distribution segment This segment produces and markets phosphate-, potash- and nitrogen-based crop nutrients and animal feed ingredients; and provides other ancillary services to wholesalers, cooperatives, independent retailers, and farmers in South America and the Asia-Pacific regions. In 2015, this segment purchased 1.5 million tonnes of phosphate based products from the company’s Phosphates segment and 2.0 million tonnes of potash products from the company’s Potash segment and Canpotex, Limited. The company’s international distribution operations also purchase phosphates, potash and nitrogen products from unrelated third parties, which the company either uses to produce blended crop nutrients (Blends) or for resale. This segment provides the company’s Phosphates and Potash segments access to markets outside of North America. International Distribution - South America Operations The company produces and distributes blended crop nutrients for agricultural use in Brazil. The company owns and operates 12 blending plants in Brazil and 1 blending plant in Paraguay. In addition, the company leases various other warehouses and blending units depending on sales and production levels. The company also has a 62% ownership interest in Fospar, S.A. (Fospar). Fospar owns and operates a single superphosphate granulation plant and a deep-water crop nutrition port and throughput warehouse terminal facility in Paranagua, Brazil.
