Monsanto Company, together with its subsidiaries, operates as a provider of agricultural products for farmers worldwide. Segments The company manages its business in two segments, Seeds and Genomics, and Agricultural Productivity. Seeds and Genomics segment This segment produces major seed brands, including DEKALB, Asgrow, Deltapine, Seminis, and De Ruiter. The company develops biotechnology traits that assist farmers in controlling insects and weeds, and precision agriculture products to assist farmers in decision making. The company also provides other seed companies with genetic material for their seed brands. Products Germplasm: The company's germplasm product is used for row crop seeds, such as corn hybrids and foundation seeds; soybean varieties and foundation seeds; cotton varieties, hybrids, and foundation seeds; and other row crop varieties and hybrids, such as canola. The company's germplasm product is also used for vegetable seeds, such as open field and protected-culture seeds for tomato, pepper, melon, cucumber, pumpkin, squash, beans, broccoli, onions, lettuce, and others. The company’s major brands include DEKALB and Channel Bio for corn; Asgrow for soybeans; Deltapine for cotton; and Seminis and De Ruiter for vegetable seeds. Biotechnology Traits: The company's biotechnology traits enable crops to protect themselves from borers and rootworm in corn, certain lepidopteran insects in soybeans, and leaf- and boll-feeding worms in cotton, reducing the need for applications of insecticides; and enable crops, such as corn, soybeans, cotton, and canola, to be tolerant of Roundup and other glyphosate-based herbicides. The company’s major brands include SmartStax, YieldGard, YieldGard VT Triple, VT Triple PRO, and VT Double PRO for corn; Intacta RR2 PRO for soybeans; Bollgard and Bollgard II for cotton; Roundup Ready and Roundup Ready 2 Yield (soybeans); and Genuity, a global umbrella trait brand. Distribution of Products The company has a worldwide distribution, and sales and marketing organization for its seeds and traits. The company sells its products under Monsanto brands and license technology and genetic material to others for sale under their own brands. Through distributors, independent retailers and dealers, agricultural cooperatives, and agents, the company markets its DEKALB, Asgrow, and Deltapine branded germplasm to farmers in every agricultural region of the world. In the United States, the company markets regional seed brands under its American Seeds, LLC and Channel Bio, LLC businesses to farmers directly, as well as through dealers, agricultural cooperatives, and agents. In countries where they are approved for sale, the company markets and sells its trait technologies with its branded germplasm, pursuant to license agreements with its farmer customers. In Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay, the company has implemented a point-of-delivery, grain-based payment system. The company contracts with grain handlers to collect applicable trait fees when farmers deliver their grain. In addition to selling its products under its own brands, the company licenses a package of germplasm and trait technologies to large and small seed companies in the United States and certain international markets. Those seed companies in turn market its trait technologies in their branded germplasm, they might also market its germplasm under their own brand name. The company’s vegetable seeds are primarily marketed under either the Seminis or De Ruiter brand in approximately 150 countries either directly to farmers or through distributors, independent retailers and dealers, agricultural cooperatives, plant raisers, and agents. Patents, Trademarks, and Licenses The company licenses technology and patents to other parties. It has licensed the Roundup Ready trait in soybean, corn, canola, and cotton seeds; and the YieldGard traits in corn to a range of commercial entities and academic institutions. The company also holds licenses from other parties relating to certain products and processes. It has obtained licenses to certain technologies that it uses to produce Roundup Ready seeds and Genuity
