Honda Motor Co., Ltd., together with its subsidiaries, engages in developing, manufacturing, and distributing motorcycles, automobiles, power products and others worldwide. The company also provides financial services to customers and dealers for the sale of those products. Segments The company’s segments include the following: the Motorcycle business operations, Automobile business operations, Financial services business operations, and Power product and other businesses operations. Motorcycle Business The company produces a range of motorcycles, with engine displacement ranging from the 50cc class to the 1800cc class. Its motorcycles use internal combustion engines that are air- or water-cooled, four-cycle, and are in single, two, four or six-cylinder configurations. The company’s motorcycle line consists of sports (including trial and moto-cross racing), business and commuter models. It also produces all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and multi utility vehicles (MUVs). The company’s motorcycles are also produced by subsidiaries in countries worldwide, including Thailand, Vietnam, India, Brazil and Argentina. Automobile Business The company’s automobiles use gasoline engines of three, four or six-cylinder configurations, diesel engines, gasoline-electric hybrid systems and gasoline-electric plug-in hybrid systems. It also offers alternative fuel-powered vehicles such as natural gas, ethanol, electric and fuel cell vehicles. Its principal automobile products include the following vehicle models: Passenger cars: Accord, Accord Hybrid, Amaze, Brio, Brio Amaze, Brio Satya, City, Civic, Civic Tourer, CRIDER, CR-Z, Fit/Jazz, Fit/Jazz Hybrid, Fit Shuttle, Fit Shuttle Hybrid, FREED, FREED Hybrid, FREED SPIKE, FREED SPIKE Hybrid, GRACE Hybrid, Honda MOBILIO, Insight, JADE, JADE Hybrid, LEGEND Hybrid, Spirior, Stream, Acura ILX, Acura RLX, and Acura TLX. Light trucks: Crosstour, CR-V, Elysion, Odyssey, Pilot, Ridgeline, Step WGN, VEZEL/HR-V, VEZEL Hybrid, XR-V, Acura MDX, and Acura RDX. Mini vehicles: Acty, Life, N-BOX, N-BOX +, N-BOX SLASH, N-ONE, N-WGN, and Vamos. Financial Services Business The company offers various financial services to its customers and dealers through finance subsidiaries in countries, including Japan, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Brazil and Thailand. The services of these subsidiaries include retail lending, leasing to customers and other financial services, such as wholesale financing to dealers. Power Product and Other Businesses The company manufactures power products, including tillers, portable generators, general-purpose engines, grass cutters, outboard marine engines, water pumps, snow throwers, power carriers, power sprayers, lawn mowers and lawn tractors (riding lawn mowers). Marketing and Distribution Most of the company’s products are distributed under the Honda trademarks in Japan and/or in overseas markets. Sales in Japan: Sales of Honda motorcycles, automobiles, and power products in Japan are made through different distribution networks. Its products are sold to consumers primarily by independent retail dealers throughout Japan. Motorcycles are distributed through approximately 5,900 outlets, including approximately 600 ‘PRO’S’ shops and approximately 110 Honda Dream authorized dealerships. As for the automobile distribution network, approximately 720 retail dealers operate 2,210 shops and sell models, including the Accord Hybrid, Accord Plug-in Hybrid, CR-Z, GRACE Hybrid, Fit, Fit Hybrid, Fit Shuttle, Fit Shuttle Hybrid, FREED, FREED Hybrid, FREED SPIKE, FREED SPIKE Hybrid, JADE Hybrid, LEGEND Hybrid, Stream, CR-V, Odyssey, Step WGN, VEZEL, VEZEL Hybrid, Acty, Life, N-BOX, N-BOX +, N-BOX SLASH, N-ONE, N-WGN, and Vamos. Power products are distributed in Japan to approximately 1,000 retail dealers throughout Japan, including affiliates of the company. Small engines are also sold to other manufacturers for use in their products. Service and Parts Related Operations in Japan: Sales of spare parts and after sales services are mainly provided through retail dealers. Training programs on automobile service technicians are provided for dealers regularly by regional operations (Japan). Overseas Sales: In 2015, approximately 97% of Honda’s overseas sales were made through its principal foreign sales subsidiaries, which distribute the company’s products to local wholesalers and retail dealers. In the United States, the company markets its products through a sales network of approximately 1,040 independent local dealers for motorcycles, approximately 1,310 for automobiles and approximately 8,200 for power products. The Acura network in the United States totaled approximately 270 dealerships at the end of 2015. The Acura network offers ILX, MDX, RDX, RLX and TLX models. With regard to exports from North America, the company is in the process of exporting such North American-built models as the Accord, Civic, CR-V, Crosstour, Fit, Odyssey, Pilot, Ridgeline, Acura ILX, Acura MDX, Acura RDX and Acura TLX to other markets. In 2015, the company exported approximately 52,000 units from North America to 49 countries throughout the world. In Europe, the company’s products are distributed through approximately 1,450 independent local dealers for motorcycles, approximately 1,200 for automobiles and approximately 2,770 for power products. History Honda Motor Co., Ltd. was founded in 1946. The company was incorporated in 1948 under the Commercial Code of Japan as Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki Kaisha.
