The company’s rare earth products are critical inputs in various existing and emerging applications, including clean energy technologies, such as hybrid and electric vehicles, and wind power turbines; multiple high-tech uses, including mobile devices, fiber optics, lasers, and hard disk drives; critical defense applications, such as guidance and control systems, and global positioning systems; and advanced water treatment technology for use in industrial, municipal, and recreational applications. Segments The company’s business is organized into four segments: Resources; Chemicals and Oxides; Magnetic Materials and Alloys; and Rare Metals. Resources This segment includes the company’s operations at the Molycorp Mountain Pass Rare Earth Facility (Molycorp Mountain Pass facility). At the Molycorp Mountain Pass facility, the company conducts rare earth minerals extraction to produce, such as purified unseparated light rare earth concentrates; separated rare earth oxides, including lanthanum, cerium, and neodymium/praseodymium; heavy rare earth concentrates, which include samarium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, and others; and a line of proprietary rare earth-based water treatment products, including SorbX and PhosFIX. Chemicals and Oxides This segment includes the production of rare earths at the company’s operations at Molycorp Silmet; heavy rare earths and other custom engineered materials from its facilities in Jiangyin, Jiangsu Province, China; and the production of rare earths, salts of rare earth elements (REEs), zirconium-based engineered materials, and mixed rare earth/zirconium oxides from its facilities in Zibo, Shandong Province, China. Rare earth and zirconium applications from products made in this segment include catalytic converters, computers, television display panels, optical lenses, mobile phones, electronic chips, and various others. Magnetic Materials and Alloys This segment includes the production of Neo Powders through the company’s wholly-owned manufacturing facilities in Tianjin, China; and Korat, Thailand, under the Molycorp Magnequench brand. This segment also includes manufacturing neodymium and samarium magnet alloys, other specialty alloy products, and rare earth metals at the company’s Molycorp Metals & Alloys facility. Neo Powders are used in micro motors, precision motors, sensors, and other applications requiring magnetic strength, small size, and reduced weight. Rare Metals This segment produces, reclaims, refines, and markets niche metals and their compounds, including gallium, indium, rhenium, tantalum, and niobium. The company’s operating facilities in this segment are located in Quapaw, Oklahoma; Blanding, Utah; Peterborough, Ontario; Sagard, Germany; Hyeongok Industrial Zone in South Korea; and Sillamäe, Estonia. Applications from products made in this segment include wireless technologies, light emitting diode (LED), flat panel display, turbine, solar, catalyst, steel additive, electronics applications, and others. Products The company’s integrated manufacturing supply chain allows the company to provide various rare earth products for customers worldwide. It produces custom engineered materials from 13 different rare earths, plus yttrium, with purity levels of approximately 6N (99.9999%), and from 5 other rare metals (niobium, tantalum, gallium, indium, and rhenium) at purity levels of approximately 8N (99.999999%). The company is a producer, processor, and developer of neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnetic powders (Neo Powders) rare earths and zirconium-based engineered materials and applications, and other rare metals and their compounds. Neo Powders are used in the production of bonded NdFeB permanent magnets, which are found in micro motors, precision motors, sensors, and other applications.
