Mobile TeleSystems Public Joint Stock Company operates as a telecommunications provider in Russia and the CIS. The company provides a range of mobile and fixed line voice and data telecommunications services, including data transfer, broadband, pay-TV and various value-added services, as well as selling equipment and accessories. As of December 31, 2015, the company had a mobile subscriber base of approximately 102.5 million (approximately 77.3 million in Russia, 20.4 million in Ukraine, 2.1 million in Armenia, 1.6 million in Turkmenistan, and 1.1 million in Uzbekistan). Mobile Operations Services Offered Network Access The company primarily offers mobile cellular voice and data communication services to its subscribers on the basis of various tariff plans designed for different market segments. Automatic Roaming Roaming allows the company’s customers, both subscribers and guest roamers, to receive and make international, local and long-distance calls while traveling outside of their home network. Roaming is provided through individual agreements between the company and other GSM operators. As of December 31, 2015, the company had bilateral roaming contracts with 784 wireless operators in 228 countries, including 16 regional operators in Russia. Value-Added Services The company offers various value-added services to its customers. These services may be included in the tariff plan selected by the subscriber or subscribers may pay additional monthly charges, and in some cases, usage charges for them. Some basic value-added services that the company offers include Basic telephony (Call Divert/Forwarding, Caller ID Display and anti-Caller ID Display, Conference Calling, Voicemail, Call Barring, Call Waiting, Missed Call Alert, Intelligent call assistant, Collect call, Black List, and International Access Service), Customer care (Itemization of Monthly Bills, Information and Directory Service, and Automatic Customer Care System and Customer Care System through the Internet), Mobile Internet (General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), 3G and 4G (LTE), Data share plan, Real IP, WEB, E-shop, APN remote access point, Fixed Mobile Convergence, MTS-Modem, MTS-Tablet, Mobile Office, and Wi-Fi), Other services (MTS-News (ICB Service), My subscriptions, Second Memory (Cloud storage), Ring Back Tone, Unstructured Supplementary Services Data (USSD), MTS-Music, MTS-TV, VoD (Video on Demand), MTS-Books, Location-Based Service (LBS), Mobile banking, and SIM-browser), and Messaging (SMS P2P and A2P, MMS, Application MTS-Connect, and SMS Pro (SMS black list, autoreply, forward, storage)). The company also provides many voice and SMS-based value-added services in cooperation with various content providers. GPRS and EDGE Services The company continues supporting and modernizing its 2G network and puts the prime focus at the development of its 3G and LTE networks to provide its subscribers with high-speed broadband wireless services. As of December 2015, the company provided GSM, GPRS and EDGE services with approximately 37,000 2G sites over the geographic area with approximately 94% of population of Russia. 3G Technology In 2007, the company received a nationwide 3G/UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) license in Russia. The license is valid through 2017 and covers the entire territory of Russia with frequencies 1950-1965 MHz and 2140-2155 MHz. The company has commercial 3G networks launched in all regions of Russia with the exception of Crimea. By the end of 2015, the company installed 37,199 3G sites throughout Russia. Together with 3G networks in Armenia, Belarus, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan and since October 2015 in Ukraine, the company operates approximately 42,000 3G sites. The company has also obtained a permit to use the UMTS 900 standard in Moscow region and Habarovskiy kray. As of December 31, 2015, the company’s UMTS 900 network consisted of 1,980 sites.
