Lonmin Plc engages in the mining of platinum group metals (PGM) in South Africa. The company owns 23.56% of its associate, Incwala Resources (Pty) Limited which is incorporated in South Africa. It also owns 42.5% of the Pandora joint venture whose operations are in South Africa. Mining - Marikana mining, Limpopo mining & Pandora Joint Venture The company’s mining operations are located in the Bushveld complex in South Africa. Its Marikana mining operations are on the western side of the Bushveld. The company’s Limpopo mine is situated near Polokwane on the Bushveld’s eastern limb. At both of its operations, the company mines the Upper Group 2 and Merensky PGM-bearing reefs. Process Division Process Division converts the ore into refined metal. Its concentrators crush the ore and transform it into a liquefied concentrate which is then sent to smelting facilities which convert the concentrate into a metal-rich matte. This matte is transported to Base Metal Refinery which extracts the base metals, primarily copper and nickel. The final stage in the process is the company’s Precious Metal Refinery which produces refined PGMs. History Lonmin Plc was founded in 1909.
