Alpha Natural Resources, Inc. engages in supplying and exporting metallurgical coal for use in the steel-making process. The company supplies thermal coal to electric utilities and manufacturing industries across the country, as well as an exporter of thermal coal. As of December 31, 2014, the company operated 60 mines and 22 coal preparation plants in Northern and Central Appalachia and the Powder River Basin. Segments The company has two segments: Eastern Coal Operations and Western Coal Operations. The company’s active operations are located in Central and Northern Appalachia and the Powder River Basin, which include the states of Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and Wyoming. As of December 31, 2014, its operations included 22 preparation plants, each of which receive, blend, process and ship coal that is produced from 1 or more of its 60 active mines. The company’s underground mines consist of one or more single or dual continuous miner sections which are made up of the continuous miner, shuttle cars or continuous haulage, roof bolters, and various ancillary equipment. The company has two large underground mines that employ a longwall mining system. The company’s Eastern surface mines are a combination of contour highwall miner, auger operations using truck/loader-excavator equipment fleets along with large production tractors and a small percentage using mountain top removal. The company’s Western surface mines are large open-pit operations that use the truck-and-shovel mining method. Eastern Coal Operations The company’s operations in Northern Appalachia (NAPP) consist of its Cumberland and Emerald mining complexes and two preparation plants. The company controls approximately 709.7 million tons of reserves through its operations in NAPP. Approximately 55.8 million tons are assigned to active mines and 653.9 million tons are unassigned. At its Cumberland and Emerald mining complexes, coal is mined primarily by using longwall mining systems supported by continuous miners. All of the coal at Cumberland is processed through a preparation plant before being loaded onto Cumberland’s owned and operated railroad for transportation to the Monongahela River dock site. In 2014, the company announced that its subsidiary, AMFIRE Mining Company, LLC had completed the divestiture of substantially all of its assets to Rosebud Mining Company. The company’s operations in Central Appalachia (CAPP) consist of 43 underground mines, 13 surface mines and 20 preparation plants, a portion of which are operated by independent contractors. The company’s operations in CAPP collectively shipped 34.1 million tons in 2014. The company controls approximately 2,513.2 million tons of coal reserves through its operations in CAPP. The company has mines that sell high Btu, low, medium and high sulfur steam coal primarily to eastern utilities and metallurgical coal to steel companies. The company transports coal produced at certain of its mines by truck and belt to the following preparation plants: Delbarton, Elk Run, Goals, Inman, Kepler, Kingston, Knox Creek, Mammoth, Marfork, McClure, Rockspring, Sidney, Superior, and Zigmond. In addition, the company transports coal by truck and belt to its Homer III loadout. Coal Brokerage: The company’s coal brokerage group purchases and sells third party coal and serves as an agent of its coal subsidiaries. Equity Method Investments: The company also has interests in significant acreage in the Marcellus Shale natural gas field of southwestern Pennsylvania. The company’s Marcellus gas joint venture with EDF Trading Resources, LLC consists of approximately 12,000 Marcellus Shale acreage. Western Coal Operations The company’s Western Coal Operations in the Powder River Basin consist of its Belle Ayr and Eagle Butte surface mining operations, which collectively shipped 36.5 million tons in 2014. Coal is mined primarily using the truck and shovel mining method. The company controls approximately 700.1 million tons of coal reserves in the Powder River Basin and all of the coal reserves are assigned to active mines. Belle Ayr consists of one mine
