able devices, including personal computers, at various speeds depending on the tier of service selected. This standard means of access is changing as the company expands its services to offer wireless networks for the home, such as Horizon TV. In certain of its markets, the company is deploying a community Wi-Fi through routers in the home (the Community Wi-Fi), which provides a secure access to the Internet for its customers. Community Wi-Fi is enabled by a cable modem Wi-Fi access point (Wi-Fi modem) in the set-top box or the Horizon TV box of the company's Internet customers. The Community Wi-Fi is created through the sharing of access to the public channel of the company’s customers’ home wireless routers. The public channel is a separate network from the secure private network used by the customer within the home and is automatically enabled when the Wi-Fi modem is installed. Access is free for the company’s Internet customers. As of December 31, 2015, the company had approximately 6.1 million Wi-Fi access points in its European footprint and the company plans to increase its Wi-Fi access points to approximately 10.0 million in 2016. In the U.K., Virgin Media’s customers have access to a network of public Wi-Fi access points, including in the London underground train stations. Public Wi-Fi access points are also available to Unitymedia customers in Germany and Telenet customers in Belgium. The company plans to expand its Community Wi-Fi service in 2016. The company’s Community Wi-Fi is branded as ‘Wi-Free’ in Austria, Belgium, Switzerland, Ireland, the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungry and Romania; and as ‘WifiSpots’ in the Netherlands. Through an agreement with Comcast Corporation, in 2016, the company’s Internet customers would also have access to various Wi-Fi access points in the U.S. and across various European countries. The company has introduced a next generation Wi-Fi and telephony gateway in the U.K., Germany, Belgium, Switzerland and Romania. This gateway includes both a data modem and a Wi-Fi router and would permit download speed of approximately 1 Gpbs across its existing Euro DOCSIS 3.0 platform and is expected to support Euro DOCSIS 3.1. It has an automatic Wi-Fi optimization function, which selects the possible wireless frequency at any given time. This gateway could be self-installed and allows customers to customize their home Wi-Fi service. It would be introduced in the rest of its operations in 2016. By using the Wi-Fi modems, the Horizon TV box and the new gateway, the Community Wi-Fi does not affect the Internet speeds of the company’s customers. In the Netherlands and Romania, a subscriber must subscribe to the company’s video service (or the video service in a partner network) to subscribe to its Internet service. In its other markets, the company’s broadband Internet service is available on a standalone basis or in combination with one or more of the company’s other services. Telephony Multi-feature fixed-line telephony services are available through the company’s managed, quality of service based voice-over-Internet-protocol (VoIP) technology in all of its broadband communication markets. In the U.K., Chile and Hungary, the company also provides traditional circuit-switched fixed-line telephony services. The company’s fixed-line telephony service might be selected in several of its markets on a standalone basis and in all of its markets in combination with one or more of its other services. The company’s fixed-line telephony service includes a basic fixed-line telephony product for line rental and various calling plans, which might consist of any of unlimited network, national or international calling, unlimited off-peak calling and minute packages, including calls to fixed and mobile phones. The company also offers value added services, such as a personal call manager, unified messaging and a second or third phone line at an incremental cost. In some of its markets, the company offers a phone app that allows its fixed-line telephony customers with smart phones to use their fixed-line call packages.
