Segments The company manufactures and sells its products in five business segments: U.S. Neurosurgery, U.S. Extremities, U.S. Instruments, U.S. Spine and Other, and International. U.S. Neurosurgery This segment sells a line of products primarily for neurosurgery and neuro critical care. The company has products for each step of a cranial procedure and the care of the patient after surgery. Its major products include dural repair products (both dural closure and dural sealants), tissue ablation equipment, intracranial monitoring equipment, cranial stabilization equipment, and cerebral spinal fluid management devices. The company sells equipment used in the neurosurgery operating room and neurosurgery intensive care unit. The company sells its products through directly employed sales representatives. U.S. Extremities This segment defines extremity reconstruction to mean the repair of soft tissue and the orthopedic reconstruction of bone in the foot, ankle and leg below the knee (Lower Extremity); and the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder (Upper Extremity). The company’s major regenerative technologies provide the treatment of acute and chronic wounds, peripheral nerve repair and protection and tendon repair, and bone graft substitutes. The company’s hardware products include bone and joint fixation devices, implants and instruments for osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, wrist and shoulder arthroplasty, carpal tunnel syndrome, and cubital tunnel syndrome. The company sells its products through a large direct sales organization and through specialty distributors focused on their respective surgical disciplines. U.S. Instruments This segment supplies surgical instrument in the United States. The company’s portfolio includes approximately 60,000 instrument patterns and surgical products sold into a universe of users, including hospitals, surgery centers, and physician, dental, and veterinary offices. In addition to selling hand-held instruments, the company sells surgical headlight systems and table-mounted retractors. While the company reaches the Acute/Hospital segment primarily with a direct sales force, it reaches the Alternate Site market with distributors. U.S. Spine and Other This segment offers spinal fusion technologies that surgeons use along the full length of the spine, as well as a differentiated offering of related orthobiologics. The company’s major spinal hardware products include integrated interbody fusion devices, minimally invasive solutions, and deformity correction. The company markets and sells a line of orthobiologics, including demineralized bone products, collagen ceramic matrices and pure synthetic bone grafting solutions. The company sells its products through specialty distributors focused on its spine and orthopedic surgeon customers, as well as through some direct sales representatives. This segment also includes private-label sales of a set of the company’s regenerative medicine technologies. Its customers are other large medical technology companies that sell to end markets primarily in orthopedics and wound care. International This segment sells similar products and is managed through various geographies, such as Europe, the Middle East and Africa; and Latin/South America, the Asia-Pacific, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.
