The company’s specialized sales force calls on companies with replacement rental needs, including insurance and leasing companies, automobile repair companies, and car dealers. Customers who rent from the company for ‘business’ purposes include those who require cars in connection with commercial activities, the activities of governments and other organizations or for temporary vehicle replacement purposes. Customers who rent from the company for ‘leisure’ purposes include not only individual travelers booking vacation travel rentals with the company but also people renting to meet other personal needs. The company’s business and leisure customers rent from both its airport and off airport locations. Off airport rentals include insurance replacements, therefore, the company must establish agreements with the referring insurers establishing the relevant rental terms, including the arrangements made for billing and payment. The company has identified approximately 192 insurance companies, ranging from local or regional carriers to large, national companies, as its target insurance replacement market. As of December 31, 2015, the company was a preferred supplier of 179 of these insurance companies and a co-primary for 39 of them. Fleet During the year ended December 31, 2015, the company operated a peak rental fleet in the U.S. of approximately 514,000 cars and a peak rental fleet in its international operations of approximately 189,000 cars, and in each case exclusive of its franchisees' fleet and Donlen's leasing fleet. The company also offers Rent2Buy in 35 states and various European countries, a program designed to sell used rental cars. Seasonality The company’s car rental operations are a seasonal business, with decreased levels of business in the winter months and heightened activity during spring and summer for the majority of countries where the company generates its revenues. To accommodate increased demand, the company increases its available fleet and staff during the second and third quarters of the year (year ended December 2015). Competition In the U.S. and Canada, in addition to local and regional vehicle rental companies, the company’s principal car rental industry competitors are Avis Budget Group, Inc. and Enterprise Holdings.
