Corning Incorporated engages in the manufacture of specialty glass and ceramics worldwide. The company manufactures and processes products at approximately 90 plants in 17 countries. Segments The company operates in five segments: Display Technologies, Optical Communications, Environmental Technologies, Specialty Materials, and Life Sciences. Display Technologies This segment manufactures glass substrates for active matrix liquid crystal displays (LCDs) that are used primarily in LCD televisions, notebook computers, and flat panel desktop monitors. This segment develops, manufactures, and supplies glass substrates using technology expertise and a proprietary fusion manufacturing process. The company offers EAGLE XG; the EAGLE XG composition; EAGLE XG Slim glass; and a line of slim glass substrates, which enables portable devices and thinner televisions and monitors. The company offers Corning Lotus Glass, a high-performance display glass developed to enable technologies, including organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays and next generation LCDs. Corning Lotus Glass helps support the demanding manufacturing processes of both OLED and LCDs for high performance, portable devices, such as smart phones, tablets, and notebook computers. The company offers Corning Willow Glass, its ultra-slim flexible glass for use in next-generation consumer electronic technologies. In 2013, the company announced the commercial launch of Corning Lotus XT Glass, a second-generation glass substrate specially formulated for high-performance displays. The Corning Lotus Glass platform offers an energy-efficient, immersive display device that features high resolution, fast response times, and bright picture quality. In January 2015, the company introduced Corning Iris Glass, a substrate that could reduce the thickness of a LCD television set, making it as thin as a smartphone, as well as providing outstanding transmission quality. Through the end of 2013, this segment also included the equity affiliate, Samsung Corning Precision Materials Co., Ltd., of which the company owned 57.5% and Samsung Display Co., Ltd. (Samsung Display) owned 42.5%. The company has a series of strategic and financial agreements with Samsung Display intended to strengthen product and technology collaborations between the two companies. Optical Communications This segment manufactures optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to provide optical solutions across the communications industry. This segment is classified into two major product groupings, such as carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services, such as video, data, and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments, and individuals for their own use. The company’s carrier network product portfolio begins with optical fiber products, including Vascade submarine optical fibers for use in submarine networks; LEAF optical fiber for long-haul, regional and metropolitan networks; SMF-28 ULL fiber for various long-haul and regional networks; SMF-28e+ single-mode optical fiber that provides additional transmission wavelengths in metropolitan and access networks; ClearCurve ultra-bendable single-mode fiber for use in multiple-dwelling units and fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) applications; and Corning SMF-28 Ultra Fiber, designed for high performance across the range of long-haul, metro, access, and FTTH network applications. The company’s optical fiber is sold directly to end users or third-party cablers worldwide. The company’s remaining fiber production is cabled internally and sold to end users as either bulk cable or as part of an integrated optical solution. Its cable products support various outdoor, indoor/outdoor, and indoor applications; and include a range of loose tube, ribbon, and drop cable designs with flame-retardant versions available for indoor and indoor/outdoor use.
