Gevo, Inc. operates as a renewable chemicals and next generation biofuels company. The company has developed proprietary technology that uses a combination of synthetic biology, metabolic engineering, chemistry and chemical engineering to focus primarily on the production of isobutanol, as well as related products from renewable feedstocks. In order to produce and sell isobutanol made from renewable sources, the company has developed the Gevo Integrated Fermentation Technology (GIFT), an integrated technology platform for the production and separation of renewable isobutanol. GIFT consists of two components, proprietary biocatalysts that convert sugars derived from multiple renewable feedstocks into isobutanol through fermentation, and a proprietary separation unit that is designed to continuously separate isobutanol during the fermentation process. The company developed its technology platform to be compatible with the existing approximately 23 billion gallons per year of global operating ethanol production capacity. Segments The company has two segments, Gevo, Inc. and Gevo Development/Agri-Energy. Gevo, Inc. This segment is responsible for all research and development activities related to the future production of isobutanol, including the development of the company’s proprietary biocatalysts; the production and sale of biojet fuel; the company’s Retrofit process; and the next generation of chemicals and biofuels that would be based on its isobutanol technology. This segment also develops, maintains and protects the company’s intellectual property portfolio, develops future markets for its isobutanol and provides corporate oversight services. Gevo Development/Agri-Energ This segment is responsible for the operation of the company’s Agri-Energy Facility and the production of ethanol, isobutanol and related products. Customer Agreements In 2014, the company began producing and selling isobutanol distiller’s grains (iDGs) as an animal feed co-product, in a similar manner as distiller’s grains are sold in the ethanol industry. As of December 31, 2014, the company entered into the following agreements: Off-take Agreements Mansfield Oil Company (Mansfield): The company has a commercial off-take agreement with Mansfield to distribute isobutanol-based fuel into the petroleum market. Mansfield markets and distributes fuel to various commercial customers across the U.S. and has approximately 900 supply points across the U.S. The company also has a three-year supply services agreement, with automatic one-year renewals thereafter, with C&N, a Mansfield subsidiary (C&N), which would provide supply chain services, including logistics management, customer service support, invoicing and billing services. Land O’Lakes Purina Feed LLC (Land O’Lakes Purina Feed): The company has a commercial off-take and marketing agreement with Land O’Lakes Purina Feed for the sale of iDGs produced by the Agri-Energy Facility. Land O’ Lakes Purina Feed provides farmers and ranchers with a line of agricultural supplies (feed, seed, and crop protection products) and services. Pursuant to the agreement, Land O’Lakes Purina Feed would be the exclusive marketer of the company’s iDGs and modified wet distiller’s grains for the animal feed market. Land O’ Lakes Purina Feed also provides marketing services for the sale of the company’s ethanol distiller grains. Partnerships and Collaborations ICM, Inc. (ICM): The company has an alliance with ICM to Retrofit ethanol plants to the production of isobutanol. ICM is a company that focuses on engineering, building and supporting biorefineries for the renewable fuel industry. Cargill, Incorporated (Cargill): The company has obtained rights to develop and integrate Cargill’s microorganisms into GIFT. These microorganisms are able to process cellulosic biomass, which would eventually allow low cost production of isobutanol from varied inputs, including purpose grown energy crops (switchgrass), forest residues (waste wood, pulp and sustainable wood), agricultural residues (corn stalks, leaves, straw and grasses), and municipal green waste (grass clippings and yard waste).
