General Communication, Inc., together with its subsidiaries, provides communication services with operations primarily in the state of Alaska. The company offers facilities-based wireless telephone services, data services, Internet access, video services and voice services, to residential and business customers across the state under its GCI brand. The company’s facilities include redundant and geographically various digital undersea fiber optic cable systems linking its Alaska terrestrial networks to the networks of other carriers in the lower 48 contiguous states. Segments The company has two segments, Wireless and Wireline. Wireless This segment provides wholesale wireless services and products to wireless carriers. The company provides network transport and access to its wireless network to wireless carriers. These services allow wireless carriers to provide full wireless services to their customers. Sales and Marketing: The company sells its wireless services primarily through direct contact marketing. Customer: Verizon was the major customer of this segment in 2014. Seasonality: This segment’s revenues derived from the company’s carrier customers have historically been highest in the summer months because of temporary population increases attributable to tourism and increased seasonal economic activity, such as construction, commercial fishing, and oil and gas activities. The company’s ability to implement construction projects is hampered during the winter months because of cold temperatures, snow, and short daylight hours. Competition: This segment competes with AT&T and Verizon. Wireline This segment offers services and products to three major customer groups as follows: Consumer: The company offers a range of retail wireless, data, video and voice services to residential customers. Business Services: The company offers a range of retail wireless, data, video and voice services to businesses, governmental entities, educational institutions, and wholesale data and voice services to common carrier customers. The company’s products and services offered to business customers include data network services, retail wireless voice and data plans, high-speed Internet service, data center services, cloud computing, video services, voice services, and managed services. Additionally, it sells advertising on the company’s broadcast television stations and cable network. Managed Broadband: The company offers Internet, data network and managed services to rural schools and health organizations and regulated voice services to residential and commercial customers in rural communities primarily in Southwest Alaska. Sales and Marketing: The company offers its services directly to consumer and business customers through its call center, direct mail advertising, television advertising, Internet advertising, local media advertising, and through its retail stores. The company’s sales efforts are primarily directed toward increasing the number of subscribers that the company serves, selling bundled services, and generating incremental revenues through product and feature up-sell opportunities. The company sells its managed services through direct contact marketing. Seasonality: The company’s ability to implement construction projects is hampered during the winter months because of cold temperatures, snow and short daylight hours. Competition: The company competes with AT&T and Verizon. Acquisitions In February 2015, the company completed the acquisition of The Alaska Wireless Network, LLC. Business Strategy The company’s business strategies include offering bundled products; improving sales opportunities; delivering industry leading customer service; leveraging communications operations; expanding its product portfolio and footprint in Alaska; and making strategic acquisitions. Regulation As wireless licensees, the company is subject to regulation by the Federal Communications Commission, and must comply with certain build-out and other license conditions, as well as with the Federal Communications Commission’s specific regulations governing wireless services. As an interexchange carrier, the company is subject to regulation by the Federal Communications Commission and the Regulatory Commission of Alaska as a non-dominant provider of interstate, international, and intrastate long-distance services. History General Communication, Inc. was founded in 1979. The company was incorporated in 1979 under the laws of the state of Alaska.
