As of December 31, 2015, the company operated 1,254 full-service banking centers, including 95 Bank Mart locations, open 7 days a week, inside select grocery stores and 2,593 automated teller machines in 12 states throughout the Midwestern and Southeastern regions of the U.S. The company also has an approximate 18% interest in Vantiv Holding, LLC. Segments The company reports on four business segments: Commercial Banking, Branch Banking, Consumer Lending, and Investment Advisors. Commercial Banking This segment offers credit intermediation, cash management and financial services to large and middle-market businesses and government and professional customers. In addition to the traditional lending and depository offerings, this segment’s products and services include global cash management, foreign exchange and international trade finance, derivatives and capital markets services, asset-based lending, real estate finance, public finance, commercial leasing and syndicated finance. Branch Banking This segment provides a range of deposit and loan products to individuals and small businesses through full-service banking centers. This segment offers depository and loan products, such as checking and savings accounts, home equity loans and lines of credit, credit cards and loans for automobiles and other personal financing needs, as well as products designed to meet the specific needs of small businesses, including cash management services. Consumer Lending This segment includes the company’s residential mortgage, home equity, automobile and other indirect lending activities. Direct lending activities include the origination, retention and servicing of residential mortgage and home equity loans or lines of credit, sales and securitizations of those loans, pools of loans or lines of credit and all associated hedging activities. Indirect lending activities include loans to consumers through correspondent lenders and automobile dealers. Investment Advisors This segment provides a range of investment alternatives for individuals, companies and not-for-profit organizations. This segment is made up of four main businesses: Fifth Third Securities, an indirect wholly-owned subsidiary of the company; ClearArc Capital, Inc., an indirect wholly-owned subsidiary of the company; Fifth Third Private Bank; and Fifth Third Institutional Services. Fifth Third Securities offers full-service retail brokerage services to individual clients and broker dealer services to the institutional marketplace. ClearArc Capital, Inc. provides asset management services. Fifth Third Private Bank offers holistic strategies to affluent clients in wealth planning, investing, insurance and wealth protection. Fifth Third Institutional Services provides advisory services for institutional clients, including states and municipalities. Loans As of December 31, 2015, the company’s loan portfolio included commercial and industrial loans; commercial mortgage loans; commercial construction loans; commercial leases; residential mortgage loans; home equity loans; automobile loans; credit card; and other consumer loans and leases. Investment Securities As of December 31, 2015, the company’s investment securities included U.S. treasury and federal agencies securities; obligations of states and political subdivisions securities; mortgage-backed securities, such as agency residential mortgage-backed securities, agency commercial mortgage-backed securities, non-agency residential mortgage-backed securities, and non-agency commercial mortgage-backed securities; asset-backed securities and other debt securities; and equity securities. Deposits As of December 31, 2015, the company’s deposits included demand deposits, interest checking deposits, savings deposits, money market deposits, foreign office deposits, other time deposits, and certificates $100,000 and over. Regulation The company and/or its banking subsidiary are subject to regulation and supervision primarily by the Federal Reserve Bank, the United States Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and the Ohio Division of Financial Institutions and additionally by certain other functional regulators and self-regulatory organizations. The company is also subject to regulation by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission by virtue of its status as a public company and due to the nature of some of its businesses. The company’s banking subsidiary is subject to regulation by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, which insures the bank’s deposits as permitted by law. The Community Reinvestment Act generally requires insured depository institutions, including the bank, to identify the communities they serve and to make loans and investments and provide services that meet the credit needs of those communities and the Community Reinvestment Act requires the Federal Reserve Bank to evaluate the performance of such depository institutions with respect to these Community Reinvestment Act obligations.
