FutureFuel Corp., through its subsidiary, FutureFuel Chemical Company, manufactures various chemical products, biobased products (such as biofuels), and biobased specialty chemical products. Segments The company operates through two segments, Chemicals and Biofuels. Chemicals This segment manufactures a listing of chemical products that are sold to third party customers. This segment comprises two components, such as ‘custom manufacturing’ (manufacturing specialty chemicals for specific customers) and ‘performance chemicals’ (multi-customer specialty chemicals). Chemical Products: The company’s plant’s custom manufacturing product portfolio includes products that are used in the agricultural chemical, coatings, chemical intermediates, industrial and consumer cleaning, oil and gas, and specialty polymers. Within this portfolio of products, two products or product families, which are produced are a bleach activator for a major detergent and consumer products manufacturer; and a proprietary herbicide (and intermediates) for a major life sciences company. Additionally, this portfolio also contains various additional products majority of which might be produced intermittently in a ‘batch campaign’ mode for various customers and end markets. Performance chemicals comprise multi-customer products, which are sold based upon specification and/or performance in the end-use application. This portfolio includes a family of polymer (nylon and polyester) modifiers and various small-volume specialty chemicals and solvents for various applications. New products include a family of acetal based solvents, including diethoxymethane, dimethoxymethane, dibutoxymethane, glycerol formal, and phenol sulfonic acid. In 2014, the company expected this product line would include an assay, industrial grade of glycerin. Additionally, in 2014 this product line might also include multi-customer sale of a bleach activator product and sale of a generic herbicide that the company has begun to market. Customers and Markets: The company’s chemical products are used in various markets and end uses, including detergent, agrochemical, automotive, oil and gas, coatings, nutrition, and polymer additives. Its customers include The Procter & Gamble Company and Arysta LifeScience North America Corporation. Biofuels This segment primarily produces and sells biodiesel. The company sells petrodiesel in blends with its biodiesel and with no biodiesel added. This segment also includes the operation of a granary in central Arkansas. The company is also a shipper of refined petroleum products on a common carrier pipeline, and buys and sells petroleum products to maintain its active shipper status on this pipeline. Biodiesel is a renewable energy product consisting of mono-alkyl esters of fatty acids. Biodiesel is used primarily as a blend with petrodiesel. Customers and Markets: The company markets its biodiesel products by truck, rail, and barge directly to customers in the United States. Research and Development The company’s research and development expense incurred were $3,444,000 for the year ended December 31, 2013.
