EZchip Semiconductor Ltd., a fabless semiconductor company, is engaged in the development and marketing of Ethernet network processors for networking equipment. Products Network Processor Chips The NP-2 is a single-chip, full-duplex, 10-gigabit (20-gigabit total) network processor. In addition to the integration of packet processing, classification search engines and media access controllers provided in the previous generation NP-1c, the NP-2 also includes traffic managers for improved quality of service. By integrating the traffic management function directly into its network processor, the company offers its customers a network processing solution that reduces power dissipation and system design costs. The NP-2 network processor is available in three models with different speeds and feature sets. The NP-2 network processor is manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC). The NP-3 is an enhanced version of the NP-2, providing a 30 gigabit total throughput. The company offers two versions of the NP-3 network processor. The first is a special version developed jointly with Marvell Technology Group Ltd. (Marvell) for Cisco Systems, Inc. (Cisco). The company developed the second version for the general market independently of Marvell. The NP-3 features more throughput than the NP-2 through the use of 90nm silicon process. It also provides enhanced traffic management and an integrated offload engine for operations, administration, and maintenance functions which are of great importance in carrier Ethernet equipment. The NP-4, a 100-gigabit network processor unit (NPU), targets 40-gigabit, 100-gigabit, and approximately 400-gigabit line-card and pizza box carrier Ethernet applications. In addition to its integrated classifiers and traffic managers, the NP-4 includes Ethernet physical layer transceivers, and for some applications may eliminate the need for a separate fabric interface chip. The NP-4 network processor is manufactured by TSMC. The company has an agreement with Marvell pursuant to which Marvell would be the sole vendor for its NP-4 network processor. The NPA is a new series of network processors targeting Ethernet Access applications. Various models of the network processors are offered with combinations of 100-megabit, 1-gigabit, and 10-gigabit Ethernet ports. The company offers customers a range of NPUs ranging in throughput from various Gigabits to 100 Gigabits, and with the NP-5, to 200 Gigabits, with similar architecture and software that can be ported to multiple product lines. Evaluation Boards and Network-processor Based Systems The company offers systems based on its network processor. Evaluation systems are usually required by customers to enable them to test their NPU-based systems. These systems also serve customers that focus and differentiate themselves through software applications and are in need of packet processing hardware platforms for their software applications. Development Software Toolkits The company, to facilitate its customers' adaptation of its products, offers toolkits that assist its customers in creating, verifying, and implementing solutions based on its network processors. These toolkits are used for customers' product development based on all of its network processors. The EZdesign toolkit is a software development toolset with a graphical user interface for writing, testing, and debugging programs for its network processors to implement a range of applications and reduce time to market of next-generation networking products. It includes a hardware-software simulator, a compiler, debugger, and other utilities. EZdriver is a toolset that facilitates the development of the control path software for its systems. It enables applications that run on the control CPU to communicate with its network processors. EZdriver consists of routines that execute on the control CPU and provide an application program interface to the network processor. It includes network processor configuration, microcode loading, creation and maintenance of network-processor lookup structures, sending and receiving frames to and from the network processor, as well as configuration and access to the network-processor statistics block. To assist its customers in their application development, the company also provides customers with a library featuring data plane code for a range of applications. These include metro Ethernet protocols, multi-protocol label switching, IPv4 and IPv6 routing, access control lists, GPON/EPON OLT functionality, network address translation, and server load balancing. Research and Development For the year ended December 31, 2013, the company’s research and development expenses included approximately $25.8 million. Customers The company targets designers, manufacturers and vendors of networking equipment, and other large-scale packet processing network systems. The company customers include Cisco; Juniper Networks; ZTE Corporation; Ericsson; Tellabs; and Huawei. Sales and Marketing The company has sales and support offices in California and Massachusetts, as well as local support in China. Intellectual Property Rights The company relies primarily on a combination of patents, trademarks, trade secret laws, confidentiality procedures and licensing arrangements to protect its intellectual property rights, as well as limiting access to the distribution of proprietary information. The company holds four U.S. registered patents No. 6,532,457: Look-ahead tree structure; No. 6,594,655: Wildcards in radix search tree structures; No. 6,625,612: Deterministic search algorithm; and No. 6,778,534: High-performance network processor. History The company was founded in 1989. It was incorporated as a limited liability company under the laws of the state of Israel in 1989 as Dan-Serb Ltd. and changed its name to LanOptics Ltd. in 1990. Further, it changed its name to EZchip Semiconductor Ltd. in 2008.
