Entergy Corporation, an integrated energy company, engages primarily in electric power production and retail distribution operations. The company owns and operates power plants with approximately 30,000 megawatts of electric generating capacity, including approximately 10,000 megawatts of nuclear power. The company delivers electricity to 2.8 million utility customers in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. Segments The company operates primarily through two business segments, Utility and Entergy Wholesale Commodities. Utility This segment includes the generation, transmission, distribution, and sale of electric power in portions of Arkansas, Mississippi, Texas, and Louisiana, including the city of New Orleans; and operation of a small natural gas distribution business. This segment includes five wholly-owned retail electric utility subsidiaries, such as Entergy Arkansas, Inc. (Entergy Arkansas); Entergy Louisiana, LLC (Entergy Louisiana); Entergy Mississippi, Inc. (Entergy Mississippi); Entergy New Orleans, Inc. (Entergy New Orleans), and Entergy Texas, Inc. (Entergy Texas). These companies generate, transmit, distribute and sell electric power to retail and wholesale customers in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. Entergy Louisiana and Entergy New Orleans also provide natural gas utility services to customers in and around Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and New Orleans, Louisiana, respectively. Also included in the Utility is System Energy Resources, Inc. (System Energy), a wholly-owned subsidiary of the company that owns or leases 90 percent of Grand Gulf (Unit No. 1 of Grand Gulf Nuclear Station (nuclear)). System Energy sells its power and capacity from Grand Gulf at wholesale to Entergy Arkansas, Entergy Louisiana, Entergy Mississippi, and Entergy New Orleans. The five retail utility subsidiaries are each regulated by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and by state utility commissions, or, in the case of Entergy New Orleans, the City Council (Council of the City of New Orleans, Louisiana). System Energy is regulated by the FERC because all of its transactions are at wholesale. Entergy Arkansas holds franchises to provide electric service in approximately 308 incorporated cities and towns in Arkansas. Entergy Louisiana holds non-exclusive franchises to provide electric service in approximately 175 incorporated municipalities and in the unincorporated areas of approximately 59 parishes of Louisiana. Entergy Louisiana holds non-exclusive franchises to provide natural gas service to customers in the city of Baton Rouge and in East Baton Rouge Parish. Municipal franchise agreement terms range from 25 to 60 years while parish franchise terms range from 25 to 99 years. Entergy Mississippi has received from the Mississippi Public Service Commission certificates of public convenience and necessity to provide electric service to areas within 45 counties, including various municipalities, in western Mississippi. Entergy New Orleans provides electric and gas service in the city of New Orleans. Entergy Texas holds a certificate of convenience and necessity from the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) to provide electric service to areas within approximately 27 counties in eastern Texas, and holds non-exclusive franchises to provide electric service in approximately 68 incorporated municipalities. As of December 31, 2015, Entergy New Orleans distributed and transported natural gas for distribution within New Orleans, Louisiana, through approximately 2,500 miles of gas pipeline. The gas properties of Entergy Louisiana were located in and around Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Entergy Texas owns a gas storage facility that provides natural gas service to certain generating stations. Entergy Services, Inc. (Entergy Services), a corporation wholly-owned by the company, provides management, administrative, accounting, legal, engineering, and other services primarily to the Utility operating companies (Entergy Arkansas, Entergy Gulf States Louisiana, L.L.C.
